Soft cover. Work and Win - Weekly Periodical for Young America, Featuring Fred Fearnot and Gypsy Jack or the Secret Symbol of Six, and Other Stories FRAGILE Vintage Pulp Periodical Published by Frank Tousey in NYC, 1922 Reprint. Fred Fearnot was a regular fictional hero whose unlikely but wild adventures regularly appeared in the cheap pulp publications of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. "Fred Fearnot and Gipsy Jack, or the Secret Symbol of Six" appeared in "Work and Win - An Interesting Weekly for Young America", published by Frank Tousey in New York City. The story was supposedly written by Hal Standish, which was likely a pseudonym used by any number of writers. This is "Work and Win" #1210, issued February 10, 1922, being a reprint of an earlier 1908 issue. The issue, as always, has a colorful cover, but no internal illustrations. As with so many such pulp publications , which were made with cheap, grainy paper, this copy is well-browned, and fragile, with its cover, which is chipped about the edges, barely attached. All the same, from the front it displays nicely. Original price 7¢ (The rear cover is blank). At the foot of the front cover is a bit of text which exhibits the over-the-top, hyper-active prose in which this kind of pulp story reveled : " Fred had carried his apparently crippled gipsy girl right into the worst kind of trap, for he saw Gipsy Jack and his men spring out with fierce exclamations. 'Ah! We have the American dog now!', hissed the gipsy leader." SERIES : Work and Win - an Interesting Weekly for Young America ISSUE : Number 1210 / TITLE : Fred Fearnot and Gipsy Jack; or The Secret Symbol of Six , and Other Stories AUTHOR : Hal Standish (Likely pseudonym) IMPRINT : Frank Tousey PLACE : 168 West 23d Street, New York DATE : February 10, 1922 EDITION : Reprint STATUS : This title is scarce in any condition, and rare in very good condition.
