Hardcover. Condition: Very Good+. Good dj. First Edition. [a good sound copy with modest shelfwear, very slight bumping to lower extremities; the jacket is heavily edgeworn, with a number of small tears and nicks, and small bits of paper loss at most corners]. (13 B&W film stills) Novelization (and thus a true first edition) of…the 1928 movie, a World War I drama about "a wistful little French girl who is both mother and sister to the seven young sky fighters of the Royal Fighting Corps quartered on her mother's farm near the French front." Colleen Moore (to whom the book is dedicated) played the girl, and the handsomest of the sky fighters was portrayed by Gary Cooper, at the time just on the cusp of becoming a major star. The picture was originally released with a Vitaphone score and music effects, but no dialogue, so for all intents and purposes it was a silent film. The number and placement of the stills illustrating the text (in three groups of four, printed on both sides of the plates) is somewhat unusual for a G&D Photoplay Edition of the era. The original stage production had a 176-performance run on Broadway in 1917, and was written by Jane Cowl (who also starred in the play) and Jane Murfin.

(4 B&W film stills) Photoplay edition to tie in with the 1929 M-G-M film adaptation of the Lonsdale play, a starring vehicle for Norma Shearer (her second talkie). She plays a charming Australian widow who's in league with a notorious jewel thief who's posing as her butler, while she's also being romanced by a British lord (played by Basil Rathbone). Norma Shearer appears in all four of the stills bound into the book, as well as on the front panel of the photographic dust jacket; Rathbone is depicted in just one, the frontispiece, in which he's in a clinch with Shearer. Never a studio to let a good property go to waste, M-G-M remade the film in 1937, with Joan Crawford.

Contact seller5-star sellerFive vintage studio still photographs from the 1964 film. Includes an intricate diagram of the process, "Electronovision," used to film the stage play. With sparse set design and a total absence of period costuming, director John Gielgud's ultra-minimal staging of "Hamlet" proved entirely new for New York audiences, and was ulti…mately wildly successful, achieving the longest run for the play in Broadway history at 137 performances. Actor Richard Burton received a Tony nomination for his performance as the tragic prince, and actor Hume Cronyn won a Tony for Best Performance by a Featured Actor in a Play. A filmed version of the play was created by recording three live performances on the then-new technology of Electronovision and editing them into a single film. Although considered lost for many years, the film was rediscovered and restored in 1995 by producer and director Paul Brownstein. 8 x 10 inches. Near Fine.
