Leather. Condition: Good. Not Staed (illustrator). The complete three books of this famous satirical allegory by Samuel Butler, Hudibras. Complemented by eighteen detailed engravings. With a portrait frontispiece, and eighteen engraved plates, two folding. Collated, complete. With individual title pages for each section. Page 192 is misnumbered 162 as called for ESTC No. T118935, this imprint has the index ending after nineteen pages. To which is added annotations to the third part, with an exact index to the whole; never before printed. Hudibras is a mock heroic poem written in the seventeenth century. It was a long narrative polemic upon the Roundheads, Puritans, Presbyterians and many more factions involved in the English Civil War. A popular satire, the work tells the story of Sir Hudibras, a Knight errant. In a contemporary full calf binding. Externally, generally smart. Title has been handwritten to the spine. Small loss to the tail of front joint, which is rubbed. Patches of rubbing to the work, heaviest to the raised bands and joints. Head of spine is lifting. Evidence of library label removal to the tail of spine. Front hinge is strained but firm. Internally, binding is strained, but remains firm. Most heavily strained between pages 48-49 and pages 96-97. Page 192 is misnumbered 162 as called for. Closed tear to the large folding plate at page 157, this tear is to the gutter and does not affect the image, which is slightly creased. Pages are bright with just the odd spots. Good. book.
