Early edition of this work, dated from the three copies listed on Copac. Adventure novel co-authored by William A. Bryce and Irish author Henry de Vere Stacpoole, known for his romance novel The Blue Lagoon.With illustrations by A. S. Boyd. In the original publisher's full cloth binding. Externally very smart with minor shelf wear only, lightly bumped to head and tail of spine and extremities, back strip lightly faded. Etchingham College prize presentation bookplate to front free endpaper awarded to OC Allaston in 1928. Internally, firmly bound. Pages generally bright and clean. Very Good Indeed. book.

Reprint. 350 pages + 2 of ads. Presumably a pirated edition, with no indication of where it was printed, though with an intriguing statement to the reverse of the half-title page that: "The whole of this work, paper, printing and binding, is British production.". It is undated, likely circa 1897 as it appears to be based upon the Dean & Son reissue of that year, with four short stories in addition to the original 1892 novella. The book is reasonably firmly bound in dark green cloth with bevelled boards, lettered and illustrated in gilt, reds, greens and black, it is externally slightly marked, bumped and rubbed. The text block, with gilt to all edges, is age browned, slightly marked and foxed with cracking at points, there is a neatly written name in ink to the front endpaper, also quite extensive light pencil notes by another former owner.

First edition, octavo, pink cloth boards with gilt lettering to spine, upper page edges stained yellow, illus eps, frontispiece, xxii + 242pp, VG- (light fading to spine, slight bruising & fraying to spine extrems, 1cm tear to cloth of spine side, light soiling to boards, some tanning to page edges and to eps, name stamp to hal-title page, top 3cm of half-title page torn off, occasional foxing).

FIRST EDITION (1897), large 4to, 365 x 245 mm, 14¼ x 9½ inches, navy blue cloth over boards, cut flush, illustrated and lettered white to upper cover with flags and a portrait of the Queen, respined neatly in blue cloth, mounted coloured frontispiece showing 2 British children speaking on the telephone to 2 American children, a hot air balloon in the distance and a liner in the centre, small black and white portrait of Victoria in her coronation robes on title page, 10 further colour plates showing life in 1837 and life in 1897, modes of transport, inventions since 1837, Crystal Palace, fire engines, the post, soldiers of the Queen, many black and white text illustrations. 58 pages of text with chapters on life before railways, George Stephenson, the police, chimney sweep boys in 1837, the telegraph, arctic exploration, the Post Office, the army in 1837 and 1897. Cover edges and corners slightly worn, tiny chip to surface at lower edge of upper cover, a little bubbling to cloth on lower cover, half-title and fore-edge of title page faintly browned, otherwise contents bright and clean.
