Hardback. Condition: Very Good. "A fascinating and insightful meditation on the act of memory as a built reality. " ? Daniel Libeskind, architectAn extraordinary book that explores the art, architecture, and design of memorials around the world from the late twentieth century to today ? an important book for our timeMemorials hold a special position in the cultural memory of communities, and collective consciousness of communities, cities, and countries. In Memory Of presents an extraordinary and moving collection of more than 60 exceptional structures commemorating some of the most destructive events of the 20th and 21st centuries, including war, genocide, terrorism, famine, and slavery from around the world. This important book highlights memorials built since 1982, featuring works from Berlin to Washington, D.C., from Montgomery, Alabama to Santiago, Chile, each urging us never to forget. In Memory Of features memorials designed by some of today's leading architects, including David Adjaye, Tadao Ando, Diller Scofidio + Renfro, Peter Eisenman, Daniel Libeskind, Maya Lin, Snøhetta, and Peter Zumthor. It also features memorials designed by artists like Elmgreen & Dragset, Isamu Noguchi, Taryn Simon, and Rachel Whiteread. The book includes well-known structures like Maya Lin's iconic Vietnam War Memorial, completed in 1982 in Washington, D.C. and more recent ones like the poignant National Memorial for Peace and Justice, completed by MASS Design Group in Montgomery, Alabama in 2018.With thoughtful essays on the subjects of hope, strength, grief, loss, and fear, and a moving foreword by Sir David Adjaye, In Memory Of helps to contextualize the projects and addresses the emotional aspects of memorialization. Beautifully designed with a minimal, reflective cover, and illustrated with 200 photographs, this book calls out to be experienced, felt, looked at, interpreted, and read in a variety of ways.…

Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. Book is clean with a square, tight binding and bright, white pages. Dust jacket has scuffs, scratches and minor wear on the edges that are difficult to see in the scans. Errata page included. Photographs by David Scheinbaum With essays by Spencer G. Lucas, Garrick Bailey, and Andrew Davis Foreword by Beaumont Newhall The Bisti Badlands in northwestern New Mexico stand out against the treeless plain of the San Juan Basin, their starkness heightened by an almost total lack of vegetation. The clay and rock soil has eroded into a variety of weird shapes that appear barren and uninviting to some observers. To others, the strange formations have a dramatic and mysterious beauty. The area also contains some of the oldest plant and animal fossils in North America. There are coal deposits from about seventy million years ago and extensive evidence that documents the extinction of the dinosaur and the beginning of the age of mammals. The area is not only geologically significant. It was inhabited by the Anasazi Indians and today is home to the Navajo. Strip mining begun in the 1970s threatened to destroy the area and prompted conservation groups to set aside a portion as wilderness. The rest continues to be mined for coal and other mineral de-posits, destroying much of the fragile environment. With stark and powerful imagery, David Scheinbaum has recorded the strange beauty of the bad-lands. Many of his pictures are from outside the wilderness area and depict geologic formations that already have been decimated. His photographs, accompanied here by essays on the scientific, historical, and cultural significance of the area, pay tribute to a unique and fragile desert landscape. Wiki notes: "Khemenu ( mnw), the Egyptian language name of the city, means "Eight-Town", after the Ogdoad, a group of eight "primordial" deities whose cult was situated there. The name survived as Coptic Shmun, from which the modern name el Ashmunein survives. The city was the capital of the Hare nome (the fifteenth nome of Upper Egypt) in the Heptanomis. Hermopolis stood on the borders of Upper and Lower Egypt, and, for many ages, the Thebaid or upper country extended much further to the north than in more recent periods. As the border town, Hermopolis was a place of great resort and opulence, ranking second to Thebes alone.…
