Soft cover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. 191 pages with photographs, diagrams and tables. Small octavo (7 1/2 x 4 1/2") bound in original publisher's pictorial wrappers. Signed by both contestants. First Hungarian edition. The World Chess Championship 1972 was a match for the World Chess Championship between challenger Bobby Fischer of the United States and defending champion Boris Spassky of the Soviet Union. The match took place in the Laugardalsholl arena in ReykjavÃk, Iceland, and has been dubbed the Match of the Century. Fischer became the first American born in the United States to win the world title, and the second American overall (Wilhelm Steinitz, the first world champion, became a naturalized American citizen in 1888). Fischer's win also ended, for a short time, 24 years of Soviet domination of the World Championship. The first game was played on July 11, 1972. The last game (the 21st) began on August 31, was adjourned after 40 moves, and Spassky resigned the next day without resuming play. Fischer won the match 12 1/2 - 8 1/2, becoming the eleventh undisputed World Champion. Condition: Signed by both contestants on half title, light edge wear else a very good to fine copy. Manuscript / Paper Collectible First Edition
No Binding. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. One sheet with the letterhead of the Preparatory Committee of the 29th Chess Olympiad 1990 in Novi Sad, with a typewritten note "Ucesnici Turnira 'Bugojno '86", names of the participants and with 7 autograph signatures of participants in the tournament. Royal octavo (9 3/4" x 8 1/4") single sheet. Signed by Anatoly Karpov, Boris Spassky, German grandmaster Artur Yusupov, Russian-French grandmaster Andrei Sokolow, Dutch grandmaster Timman, English grandmaster Tony Miles (1955 - 2001) and the Yugoslav-Serbian grandmaster Ljubomir Ljubojevic. The strongest tournament held between 1986 and 1987 was Bugojno 1986. This was a Class 12 tournament, including six of the top ten players in the world (from the May 1986 rating list). The next-strongest tournaments were Tilburg 1986 (Class 11) and Vienna (Open) 1986 (Class 9). The 5th International Bugojno Chess Tournament held in Yugoslavia in 1986 was the first category XVI event ever held. Eight top grandmasters were invited to participate in the double round robin. They were (in order of ELO): Anatoli Karpov (2700), Jan Timman (2645), Artur Yusupov (2645), Anthony Miles (2610), Lajos Portisch (2610), Boris Spassky (2610), Ljubomir Ljubojevic (2605), and Andrei Sokolov (2595). Karpov won once again, but Andrei Sokolov also made a terrific showing going undefeated and dealing Karpov his only loss in the tournament.
