hardcover. Condition: Good. Our good condition books are generally good for reading but not for gifting or collecting. They could have imperfections such as creasing, fanning, inscriptions, margin notes, yellowing, staining on edge or cover or pages, bumps, scuffs, etc etc (sometimes multiple of these). It's a wide category that encompasses anything that isn't almost-new down to anything that is slightly better than poor. We would NOT recommend gifting Good books - these should be considered reading copies. Our books are dispatched from a Yorkshire former cotton mill. We list via barcode/ISBN so please note that the images are stock images and may not be the exact copy you receive, furthermore the details about edition and year might not be accurate as many publishers reuse the same ISBN for multiple editions and as we simply scan a barcode or enter an ISBN we do not check the validity of the edition data when listing. If you're looking for an exact edition please don't order (at least not without checking with us first, although we don't always have time to check). We aim to dispatch prompty, the service used will depend on order value and book size. We can ship to most countries, see our shipping policies. Payment is via Abe only.

Filmed along Bristol Harbour between 1978 and 1983, The Harbour chronicles a period of significant change for the city, reflecting the broader experience of loss and regeneration in Britain at the time. After centuries during which the harbour was a central hub of the city's trade and a major generator of its wealth, by good and bad means, it had largely fallen silent. The end of that working life in the late sixties and mid-seventies left the sculptural presence of the Floating Harbour, surrounded by the disused and decaying harbour fabric: the cranes, the bridges, the pump houses, the warehouses and particularly the gigantic customs warehouses, the offices, the railways, the terraced houses, the dockyards with their dry docks, the sandbanks. The Harbour Southam documents the disused and neglected infrastructure, a brief period of calm after those centuries of activity, before the redevelopment truly began. It is an archival record of the architectural landscape more than a meditation on loss. The industrial life of the docks, and all the human stories it impacted, are preserved in the record but not mourned.

Hardcover. Condition: New. Signed by the Photographer\n\nThe Moth derives from one black-and-white picture that Jem Southam made in about 1983: a solitary man standing on Gwithian beach in St Ives, Cornwall. From this singular, meditative moment, the book of otherwise unpeopled, colour photographs unravels like a succession of memories, drifting back and forth through time. Over the course of 30 years, Southam intermittently returned to the west of Cornwall to explore a place steeped in marine and mining history, and in the mythology of Celtic saints who exiled to Cornish shores. His poetic sequence of images, inspired by the alliterative verse of the old English poems The Wanderer and The Seafarer, moves from vistas of meadows to water streams, forgotten homes and farm dogs awaiting their food. Now and then, Southam's fluctuating current of pictures is punctuated by a sublime moment in the rural landscape, only to be eclipsed by the hazy memory of The Moth.\n\nLinen hardback\n72 pages\n30.5 x 24 cm\nISBN: 978-1-912339-16-7.

Softcover. Condition: Very Good. Immediate dispatch from Somerset. Nice book in great condition. Pages in excellent condition. No notes or highlighting. See images. Fantastic book. About the book >.>.> So, while the facilities of the City Docks were progressively upgraded from the 1830s onwards, the harbour retained something of the scale of the medieval port. This was, of course, a function of the old port's decline; a melancholy but inexorable process which accounts for much of what is described in the following pages. The fortunes of the port of Bristol were, as we shall see, already deteriorating by the middle years of the eighteenth century. This can be attributed in large measure to the listless conservatism of the city's governing and merchant elite and, later, the feeble management of the Floating Harbour by the Bristol Dock Company. More decisively, however, the nineteenth century port was condemned to failure by its own geography; as ocean-going ships grew in size there could be no future for an inland harbour which was approached by a lengthy and awkward river passage subject to a huge tidal range. For Bristol to enjoy anything like its former status a new port would be needed on the Bristol Cha.

Tapa Dura. Condition: New. 1ª Edición. Libro, Book, Buch. Livre.
