Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. 8vo; vi, 146 pages; slate blue ribbed cloth, horizontal bands at top of front cover, spine gilt lettered; a very nice copy. Title in red and black with small oval portrait of Cabot's head (the shop was located at the Sign of Cabot's Head). The third of the bookseller William George's great Americana catalogues; the first in 1876, and the second in 1881. Both collections were sold out, the majority of the books going collectors in the New World. This catalogue lists 2349 entries, carefully described for the time, gathered over nine years, and is priced in dollars. Interesting apology for the seemingly highish prices, an advance of those in the previous decade, but points out that Americana prices will never be lower, and the field will grow in the future. Advance copies were sent only to American collectors. Mind boggling rare book and map offerings, and the prices seem to be mostly between $ 3.00 and $ 20.00! This is an interesting copy, inscribed on the front free endpaper to the Caxton Club (Chicago) from W. Irving Way and dated Aug 22, 1898. Way, at the turn of the century, donated around 1000 books about books, bibliographies and reference books on bookbinding to the Caxton Club but, alas, the club never had a building or place to house the books, and the collection was initially stored and finally sold off. Copies from this collection have a tiny ink number at the top of the rear free endpaper - this 836.

Both items in good condition, lightly aged. The autograph receipt is on a slip of paper attached to the invoice with sealing wax. The invoice is docketed: 'For Par Re: Richd Clarke | 1825 | Sepr. 13th. | Mr Lupton Rolfe Bill for Books | £2 13 6 | No 13 Cornhill London'. ONE: Invoice. 1p., 12mo. Handsome letterhead for items 'Bought of Lupton Relfe | (From J. Hatchard's Son's [sic]) | Bookseller, Publisher & Stationer. | No. 13, Cornhill | Merchants, Captains, Book Societies & Schools supplied on liberal Termes | Periodical Publications, books neatly & elegantly bound.' Itemised bill for 'Mr Clarke', containing six items totalling £2 13s 6d, and including 'Simsons Euclid 12mo', 'Popes Odyssey 2 Vols' and 'East India Register'. TWO: Receipt, reading: 'Received Sepr 13. 1825 of Mr Clarke Two Pounds 13/6 for Books as Pr Bill | Lupton Relfe | 13 Cornhill'. There is no entry for Relfe in BBTI. The British Museum Department of Prints and Drawings has him commissioning three prints at his Cornhill address between 1822 and 1828, and notes a possible connection with the firm of Relfe & Fletcher.

Bound in two stout volumes (1923-24 and 1925-27) of blue cloth, with titles in gilt on spine. In good condition, lightly-aged, with bindings good and tight, though a little dulled. An important artefact of one of the leading London academic booksellers of the period, as well as a valuable bibliographical resource. The 57 catalogues consist of a main sequence of 53, numbered 20 (January 1923) to 72 (December 1927), together with a further four which include three forming a 'Special Series' (1924-5). The 57 catalogues total 2107pp., 8vo, and contain around 28,000 entries, described with the crisp scholarly accuracy set by the brothers' father Bertram Dobell (1842-1914; DNB). The emphasis is on English Literature of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, with whole catalogues devoted to manuscript material. (E.g.Catalogue 53 (March 1926) lists 3 second folios, and five pages of Shakespeariana). Included are books from the Britwell Court Library of S. R. Christie-Miller (No.35, May 1924), and 'the Library of the late H. F. House, Esq., Comprising English Plays of the Seventeenth Century, Dramatic Literature, Shakespeareana, etc.' (No.33, March 1924), the latter with a note on the previous owner.
