Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. 1st Edition. Duodecimo size, 257 pp. Part of "The 'Lecture Notes' Series" published by Blackwell Scientific in the 1950s and 1960s, this work on Dermatology "is intended to be an introduction to dermatology for students and general practitioners. It deals chiefly with common diseases, and to a lesser extent with some conditions which are often a sign of systematized syndromes" (Preface). The author goes on: "The importance of the skin cannot be underestimated when it is considered that life is a continuous process of the interaction between the body and its environment, and that the skin surface is the medium through which most external stimuli are received". This volume is not for the faint of heart, as it is replete with both black and white and color illustrations showing various diseases of the skin - 110 illustrations total, 32 of which are in colour (according to the dust jacket). We found little information regarding the author, although he does seem to be a "Junior"; there is another Bethel Solomons listed online which, given the dates, may very well be his father; this Bethel Solomons (1885-1965) was also a doctor, as well as an international rugby player for Ireland. His father was an optician, Maurice Solomons (1832-1922), who interestingly had his practice mentioned in James Joyce's "Ulysses"; the family is one of the oldest continuous Jewish families in Ireland. (Info from Wikipedia.) ___DESCRIPTION: Green cloth binding with gilt lettering on the spine, plain endpapers, illustrated with both black and white and color photographs; pagination: (i-iv), v-viii, 1-249. Cream colored dust jacket has red lettering, a summary of the book on the front flap, publisher's ads for additional titles in the series on both the back panel and the back flap. ___CONDITION: Overall, this volume is fine condition with a strong, square text block, solid hinges, straight corners with no rubbing, the interior is clean and bright. We are grading as near fine due to some prior owner markings (he neatly stamped his name to the front free endpaper as well as the bottom of the text block) and one "ding" (a shallow puncture) to the spine which did go through the cloth. The unclipped dust jacket with the original price of 21s net is in very good condition overall, however we are grading as good only due to several condition issues: the ding referred to above is also on the spine of the DJ, there is overall minor soiling, some darkening to the spine, and minor overall edgewear; some closed tears and a small chip out of the top of the jacket where the front panel meets the spine; also, the prior owner made the same neat stamp of his name to the front of the dust jacket. ___POSTAGE: International customers, please note that additional postage may apply, please contact seller for details. ___Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the ABAA, ILAB and IOBA and we stand behind every book we sell.
