Wrappers. Condition: Good. Amalgamated Society of Lithographic Printers and Auxiliaries, Manchester, Published 1929. Wraps, 96 pp.; 16 cm; rules revised at the Bristol delegate meeting, June 1928. In Good condition. Stiff waxy maroon wraps with a chip (about 2 inches by 1/2 inch) to the fore edge of front cover, mild shelf wear, and a hint of color loss along spine. Staple bound; binding tight. Bristol Branch Bye-Laws (1928) printed at the front, facing the title page. Interior pages mildly aged, with occasional light spotting and soiling and rust staining from the staples at the center. Otherwise unmarked. Rulebook of the craft union founded at Manchester in 1880 and headquartered at Senefelder House, named for Alois Senefelder, the inventor of lithography. The rules were issued triennially from 1883; this issue carries the revision adopted at the Bristol delegate meeting of June 1928 and was printed the following year by the Co-operative Printing Society, the worker-owned Manchester house that served the labour, trade union, and co-operative movements. Registered No. 475 T under the Trade Union Act. It governs a skilled trade at the point where hand stone lithography was giving way to metal-plate and offset machine printing, addressing apprenticeship limits, colour mixing, machine minding, overtime, and the exclusion of non-society labour, and setting out the full scale of benefits (unemployed, sick, accident, dispute, superannuation, and funeral). Also present are the Stone and Plate Preparers' Supplementary Rules and the Agreement incorporating the Stone and Plate Preparers' Society into the Amalgamated Society. Printed in the wake of the 1926 General Strike, in which the printing trades were pivotal, and the Trade Disputes Act of 1927. The society was absorbed into the National Graphical Association in 1969. A scarce survival, superseded at each triennial revision and seldom found outside institutional archives (OCLC 1491260242).…

Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book is a comprehensive look into the historical evolution of books, from ancient handwritten manuscripts to the development of printing and its pivotal influence on the availability of literature. The book traces how the advancement of printing drastically improved literacy rates and book accessibility, contributing to the decline of the wealthy patron system and the rise of authorship as a profession. Its historical context explores the transition from the written to the printed page, discussing the impact of this technological revolution on the production of books and their availability to the general public. The author analyzes the book's physical evolution through the emergence of different printing techniques, paper qualities, and typefaces used over centuries. These changes in book production reshaped how societies interacted with literature and education, providing a fascinating insight into the history of the dissemination of knowledge. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.…
