Paperback. Condition: Very Good. "Dark and mordantly funny . . . a real machine-gun narrative--the man can tell a story, oh, yes, indeed." --T. C. Boyle What could cause Bob to give up his job at the Los Angeles pathology lab that demands so little of him, where he can play Tetris and Web surf whenever he wants? What could lead him to walk out on his beautiful girlfriend, who makes her living as a masturbation coach? What could make him risk everything and ultimately transform him into Roberto, a kingpin in the Los Angeles Mexican mafia? An erotic tattoo. But not just any naughty skin ink, the Mona Lisa of erotic tattoos, painted on a severed arm, which lands on Bob's desk one morning. Bob may have fallen for the woman in the tattoo, but he's not the only one who wants the arm. There's the telenovela-addicted mobster who lost it, the jefe who needs to keep it out of the clutches of the police, a backstabbing cannabis aficionado/Wharton MBA, and a wine snob LAPD detective who knows that the arm is the evidence he needs to bring down the entire Mexican mafia.…

Paperback. Condition: Very Good. An "audacious satire" of high culture, low standards, reality TV, and instant fame by the author of Moist (Vanity Fair). Sweet natured and as dumb as a bag of hammers, Sepp Gregory parlayed his six-pack abs and broken heart into overnight success on the insanely popular "reality-based" television show Sex Crib. Now, People magazine's "sexiest man alive" is touring the country with his bestselling debut novel, a barely fictionalized memoir he neither wrote nor read. He's signing books shirtless, so no one cares--except for struggling novelist and bastion of intellectualism, Harriet Post. One of the blogosphere's stuffiest literary minds, Harriet believes Sepp is the very definition of the apocalypse. Determined to pen an exposé on the publishing industry, Harriet hijacks the book tour and uncovers the ghostwriter. But when her self-righteous campaign ends in a tragic accident, reality collides with "reality" and Sepp and Harriet take it on the lam. Hightailing it on a sex-fueled road trip through the Southwest, Harriet is finally in step with contemporary culture. Coming "across as the slightly more well-adjusted offspring of Hunter S. Thompson and James Ellroy," Mark Haskell Smith is at his raucous best in this "incisive, caustic . . . hilarious and . . . unexpectedly sweet illustration of why we write and read in the first place" (Los Angeles Times). "Subversively funny . . . Think Don DeLillo meets Jersey Shore." --The Wrap "Both hilarious and absurd. You'll laugh (and sometimes blush) the whole way through." --People.…

Hardback. Condition: Good. In the 5th Century BCE, the city-state of Athens gave every male citizen the right to voice their opinions and participate in civic life, but this first blush of democracy resulted in a mob of drunken Athenians parading gigantic phalli through the streets as they gleefully hurled insults at each other. It was from this wine-sodden revel that comedy was born-- a complicated and messy origin that grows only more relevant in light of our democracy's current struggles. Twice a year, thousands of Athenians would attend festivals that turned comedic writing into a fierce battle for fame, money, and laughably large trophies. While the tragedies earned artistic respect, it was the comedies--the raunchy jokes, vulgar innuendo, outrageous invention, and barbed political commentary--that captured the imagination of the city. The comedic writers feuded openly, insulting one another within their plays, each production more inventive and outlandish than the last, as they tried to top the other and win first prize. Of these writers, only the work of Aristophanes has survived. It's through his plays that we know about the other playwrights who were his competition: Cratinus, the great lush; Eupolis, the copycat; and Ariphrades, the sexual deviant. These insults were no laughing matter as being on the sharp end of one of Aristophanes' jokes could destroy a reputation. It might have been the golden age of Democracy, but for comic playwrights, it was the age of Rude Talk. Through conversations with historians, politicians, and other writers, the always witty and effusive Smith embarks on a personal mission (bordering on obsession) exploring the life of one of these unknown writers, and how comedy challenged the patriarchy, the military, and the powers that be, both then and now. A comic writer himself and author of many books and screenplays, Smith also looks back at his own career, his love for the uniquely dynamic city of Athens, and what it means for a writer to leave a legacy.…

Hardback. Condition: Very Good. When the greedy owner of a Las Vegas movie catering company tries to muscle in on a local, family-owned business in Honolulu, it leaves a very bad taste in the mouths of the natives, and the battle for paradise begins for Joseph, a young Hawaiian chef. As far as Joseph's father Sid is concerned, this is an invasion on par with Captain Cook and the mainlanders have to be stopped at all costs. As Joseph defends his family he encounters a TV producer rebounding from a bad breakup and suffering from an unrelenting chemically induced erection, the producer's androgynous New Age-y assistant, and a trash-talking lap-dance-addicted stroke survivor. Adding to this frenetic luau is Joseph's old-school Polynesian uncle, his bodybuilder cousin, and his politically correct, retro-Hawaiian girlfriend. With the lines drawn and the locals breathing fire down their necks, the Sin City boys decide to enlist the services of an ecstasy-popping ex-Marine hit man. Then things go horribly wrong-or, depending on how you look at it, just right. Mark Haskell Smith's Delicious is an uproarious, delectably dark mystery that offers a take on Hawaii that definitely hasn't been endorsed by the tourist bureau.…
