The author served in WWII, being involved with cloak-and-dagger activities both then and after the war in various theatres of operations. He commanded the Sultan of Muscat's forces and later served in Oman and the Yemen and was involved with both insurgency and counter-insurgency operations. He commanded the military operation using the SAS to expel the Saudi backed rebels from the Jebel Akhdar. A detailed account of this action is documented in the first part of the book.
