Condition: new. ALL UK PARCELS SENT TRACKED! ALL OVERSEAS PARCELS SENT AIRMAIL, TRACKED! (New, Hardcover, 2008). 2008 1st edition thus. 16mo (105 x 159mm). Ppxviii,134,ads. B/w photographs, bibliography, black, decoratively grained end-papers. Powder-blue, decoratively grained paper-covered boards, spine titled in gilt. Fine new copy in dust-wrapper. Carefully selected excerpts from the writings of G.E.M. Skues. "George Edward Mackenzie Skues has been described not only as the father of nymph fishing, but as the greatest fly fisher who ever lived. He was also a modest, humorous and warmly companionable writer whose writings never lost sympathy for his fellow anglers. .Skues's books established him as a masterful angling theorist. .They revealed him to be an extraordinary observer of the trout's world. [This book] excerpts his pathbreaking observations and insights into how trout live. His study of wild trout was the most penetrating examination of trout-fishing natural history yet published - a brilliant work eloquently adapted to the needs of the fly fisher Skues had a rare gift for sifting through many generations' accumulation of opinion and advice, keeping only what was truly useful and adapting it to the needs of the modern angler in a rapidly changing world." A nicely designed and presented new abridgement which provides an excellent preliminary to further exploration of the work of GEM Skues. .

A compilation of letters, mainly on flies and fly-dressing, with many references to fishing experiences on the Itchen and Nadder. Includes a preliminary biographical note and linking passages by the editor. George Edward MacKenzie Skues, usually known as G. E. M. Skues (1858-1949), was a British lawyer, author and fly fisherman most noted for the invention of modern-day nymph fishing and the controversy it caused with the Chalk stream dry fly doctrine developed by Frederic M. Halford. His second book, The Way of a Trout with a Fly (1921) is considered a seminal work on nymph fishing. Skues was to fish the Itchen every season until 1938. Until 1917, it was as a guest of his client, Irwin Cox. From 1917 to 1938, he was part of a syndicate with rights to the Barton Abbey fishery. In 1887 he acquired a copy of Frederic M. Halford's Floating Flies and How to Dress Them and that, along with his association with Francis Francis, was when he began his empirical exploration of upstream fishing with both dry flies and nymphs.
