Cloth. Condition: Very Good -. Dust Jacket Condition: Good -. First Edition. This 310-page, 62-year-old First Edition offering in VG-/G- condition is The Commonweal Reader, Edited by Edward S. Skillin, published by Harper & Brothers Publishers in 1949. Not an ex-library copy, this book evidences some staining from original glue…on paste down and loose end pages front and back, some modest yellowing of text's pages, and there was a brief gift message on upper portion of front loose end page, in pencil, which I erased but some of which can still be faintly seen in spots. The dust jacket has seen some wear in doing its job so well. Noticeable shelf wear is seen, especially along top edges of front and back cover sections, as well as top and bottom edges of jacket's spine. I also clear-taped in 7-8 random spots to shore up small tears, and the jacket has been price clipped. From front inside jacket flap, "This anthology reflects the unique position in American life occupied by 'The Commonweal' for 25 years, for it contains some of the most trenchant criticism and most satisfying literary appraisals of the quarter century just past. Under four categories have been assembled significant samples of writings which at the same time make excellent reading and illustrate the kind of Christian values 'The Commonweal' strives to display. Under 'Actualities' appear reportage and comment by writers such as Thomas Merton, Michael Williams, and Franz Werfel; under 'Perspectives', creative criticism of the order of Berdyaev, Maritain, and Bernanos; plus a fine collection of stories by Dorothy Day, Jesse Stuart, J.F. Powers, and others; and a collection of verse by such poets as Jessica Powers, W.H. Auden and Robert Lowell. All of these 46 selections have appeared in weekly issues of 'The Commonweal' over a score of years and are published to commemorate the silver jubilee of its founding. A complete table of contents appears on the back of this jacket. Edward S. Skillin, editor and compiler of this book, has been editor-in-chief of 'The Commonweal' since 1942." Some of the other authors featured in Stories and Verse sections include James Hopper, Warren Ramsey, Bernard Raymund, Jessamyn West, Thomas Walsh, and Henry Rago. Thank you!.
