"The afternoon sun shone gently down on a thousand troopers under the command of Brigadier General William Harney, as he rested his black horse on the dry rise over-looking Nebraska's Blue Water Creek. There was the camp of peaceful Brule Sioux, under the leadership of Little Thunder. Harney nodded to Major Rowell mounted beside him and unsheathed his saber as he gazed down at the tepees huddled about the water-bank, watched young and old squaws bathing in the warm creek, children playing on the hot sands, and warriors sunning themselves. These people had been ordered to move, and they had paid no heed to General Mitchell Corey's order. Now Corey had given another order. It would be a massacre, Major Rowell pro-tested, and the men had no heart for slaughtering unarmed, peaceful Indians. Harney told the major bluntly that he would be held responsible for any man who refused to carry out orders. He dropped his saber to his side and called out, "Ride them down! Kill every last one of them!" THIS book still has it's original card and sticker from the Young Men's Library Association in Ware, Massachusetts. The book entry date was May 1, 1964. First Edition Signed
Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. 1st Edition. Avalon Books. New York. 1965. 192 pages. First edition; first printing. Warmly inscribed by the author on front free endpaper; '65 To Don, Happy Trails - May success be the horse that you ride- With happiness prancing along by your side. Samuel and Bert Sisco. Book would grade fine if not for black specks along edges; remnants of an old DJ protector with a black edge liner. The DJ rescued from that liner is about perfect; its only flaw being slight rumpling from being squeezed in that vintage DJ protector for the last 50 years. A nice copy with noted flaws; signed by the author who explores man's struggle with himself in the time of war; this being the closing days of the American Civil War; taking place in the Southwest.
