ALS to Mrs Hall-Walker on headed notepaper, 'Government House, Farnborough, Hants'. "Feb.16.1907. My dear Mrs Hall-Walker, Your most kind letter has been lying some days at my little flat in London and I am truly sorry for the delay in answering. To my deep sorrow I must once again tell you I am quite unable to get away for the National. They find me a lot of work to do in London now and it is most difficult sometimes to miss the show ___ also. It makes it quite impossible to indulge in any such delightful changes as you are good and kind enough to suggest. Perhaps later on I may be able to persuade you to wine and dine and do a play or something in London? You used to be kind to me in that way once! When the Military authorities have done with me I am thinking of going into a monastery! as being the only kind of place which my present 'recluse' and unsociable life can horribly qualify me to frequent! It really was most kind of you to think of me and I feel this very much. Yours ever loving, John French" Both sides of folded sheet. Stamped, franked envelope to "Mrs Hall Walker, Frampton Court, Dorchester". Sir John French (1852-1925) joined the army in 1874, served in Sudan and the Boer War (1899-1901) and commanded the British Expeditionary Force in France from the outbreak of World War I in August 1914 until December 1915. An interesting comment about going to a monastery when the British authorities had finished with him!

ALS to Mrs Walker on headed notepaper with 'Army & Navy Club, Pall Mall, SW' crossed out and 'Government House, Farnborough, Hants' handwritten in. Dated Jan 7, 1903. "My dear Mrs Walker, So many thanks for your most kind note. Please also accept my warmest and best wishes for a Happy New Year. But I think you are always happy! I suppose you deserve to be. I can always run up to town for a night & should like a "Play Party" immensely. Would you very kindly give me a little notice as I have several engagments of sorts. For instance I have to unveil a monument in Alton Parish Church on Wednesday (13) evening and entertain the Sec of State for War at Aldershot the next two nights. With many thanks. Yours sincerely, John French" Sir John French (1852-1925) joined the army in 1874, served in Sudan and the Boer War (1899-1901) and commanded the British Expeditionary Force in France from the outbreak of World War I in August 1914 until December 1915.
