Sir Isaac Pitman (4 January 1813 ¿ 12 January 1897), an Englishman knighted in 1894, developed the most widely used system of shorthand, known now as Pitman shorthand. He first proposed this in Stenographic Soundhand in 1837. Pitman founded a company called Sir Isaac Pitman and Sons, which became a one of the world's leading educational publishers and training businesses. The spine is lightly faded and there is a tiny closed tear on the front free endpaper. The spine is lightly faded, there is minor cracking on the bottom of the front endpaper, and page 344 is lightly soiled. "Phonographers, we are sure, will agree with us that we cannot do other than begin our customary retrospective review of the year just closed with a reference to the topic which has been uppermost in the minds of our readers since last September, namely, the state of health of the 'Father of Phonography,' and the founder of this Journal. Some light scratches on the back cover, the front bottom corner is bumped and the endpapers are toned.
