Hardback. Condition: Very Good Plus. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. Second Edition. 1953. Reprint of the second (revised) edition of 1951. [viii], 300pp., frontispiece portrait, 7 plates and 4 in-text illustrations. Sir Charles Scott Sherrington (1857-1952) was a British neurophysiologist. His experimental research established many aspects of contemporary neuroscience, including the concept of the spinal reflex as a system involving connected neurons, and the ways in which signal transmission between neurons can be potentiated or depotentiated. During the academic year 1937-38, Sherrington delivered the Gifford lectures at the University of Edinburgh. They focused on Fernel and his times, and formed the basis of Man on His Nature. It explores philosophical thoughts about the mind, human existence, and God, in accordance with natural theology. The first edition appeared in 1940, and this second edition has been entirely revised and reset. The book is bound in the original green cloth covered boards with gold titling on the spine. The book is in excellent condition and the contents are tight and clean. There is an inscription on the front free endpaper together with a small name and address label of the American sociologist Susan Leigh Star (1954-2010). The clipped dustwrapperhas some shelf wear with light soiling and the spine is sunned. The spine ends are lightly bumped with small pieces missing from the top spine corners.
