First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. 1st Edition. Printed in the U.S.A. [Date from the copyright page.] First Printing. Frontispiece, Preface, List of Plates, List of Text Figures, Introduction, Footnotes, Appendix, List of Works Cited, Index; xxiii, 307 pages. Chart in Pocket at rear: West Façade of Chartres Cathedral. The Appendix on the Proportions of the South Tower of Chartres Cathedral has its own introduction, conclusion and a list of tables and diagrams. The original blue-gray cloth, with black cloth spine, has a bumped corner and a touch of toning to the edges; gilt lettering on spine and Bollingen design on upper board are still bright. The interior is bright, crisp and clean; however, a number of pages are bumped at the top corner. Top-edge is blue-gray. The folding chart in rear pocket is fine. The original unclipped ($6.50) dust jacket is downgraded because of its sunned spine and much discoloration---mostly to the inside. [Please see my five images of the actual book.] "According to the Platonizing metaphysics of the Middle Ages, light is the most noble of natural phenomena, the least material, the closest approximation to pure form. For a thinker like Grosseteste, light is actually the mediator between bodiless and bodily substances, a spiritual body, an embodied spirit, as he calls it." (Page 51.) As with every book from my father's collection, tipped-in at the front is the small, attractive, acid-free bookplate pictured on my homepage. All books are wrapped with special care and are shipped promptly with tracking; international sales sent via global priority, also with tracking.
