Paperback. Condition: New. For myriad reasons, breastfeeding is a fraught issue among mothers in the U.S. and other industrialized nations, and breastfeeding advocacy in particular remains a source of contention for feminist scholars and activists. Breastfeeding raises many important concerns surrounding gendered embodiment, rep…roductive rights and autonomy, essentializing discourses and the struggle against biology as destiny, and public policies that have the potential to support or undermine women, and mothers in particular, in the workplace. The essays in this collection engage with the varied and complicated ways in which cultural attitudes about mothering and female sexuality inform the way people understand, embrace, reject, and talk about breastfeeding, as well as with the promises and limitations of feminist breastfeeding advocacy. They attend to diffuse discourses about and cultural representations of infant feeding, all the while utilizing feminist methodologies to interrogate essentializing ideologies that suggest that women's bodies are the "natural" choice for infant feeding. These interdisciplinary analyses, which include history, law, art history, literary studies, sociology, critical race studies, media studies, communication studies, and history, are meant to represent a broader conversation about how society understands infant feeding and maternal autonomy.

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. 330 pages. Sexual Artifice marks the evolution of Genders from a triannual journal to a biannual anthology. Henceforth, each volume will have a focus on a particular ge nder-related issue, offering original essays on the specific theme. This volume proposes that there is something more to the soc…ial construction of gender than what social science has been able to describe. On the contested state of intern ational politics, public imagery, and nationalist cinema, the artifice of sexual ity wields an enormous power to influence the interpretation of our social selve s and the world we live in. These essays collectively explore the art of constru cting gender in symbolic media images; in poetry, photography, and montage; in d ramatic identity politics; and, last but not least, in contemporary feminism its elf. With original essays on Virginia Woolf's Orlando; Anita Hill, Clarence Thom as and the culture of romance; Valerie Solanis (the woman who shot Andy Warhol); male hysteria and the U.S. invasion of Panama; and representations of women in Northern Ireland, Sexual Artifice offers up some of the most thought-provoking a nd daring young scholarship in contemporary cultural and gender studies. >[ g o to the Genders website ].
