Condition: new. ALL UK PARCELS SENT TRACKED! ALL OVERSEAS PARCELS SENT AIRMAIL, TRACKED! (New, Paperback, 1999). (1931) 1999 pbk reprint. 8vo paperback (153 x 226mm). Ppxv,174. Colour & b/w plates, illustrations by George Sheringham. Fine new copy. Hugh Sheringham died in mid-1930, during the preparation of this book for publication. Sheringham's co-author John Moore saw their book through publication, adding a 1,600-word appreciation of Sheringham's life by way of introduction. Sheringham designed this book as a wide-ranging introduction to the fly-fishing of the time with a representative sample of good-quality authors. Australasia was omitted because the manuscript of that section was lost in transit. Exceedingly expensive British rivers such as the Herefordshire Wye and the Spey were omitted as being unattainable and therefore irrelevent to the practical angler. Contributions from Skues, Van Dyke, Radcliffe, Ransome, Calderwood, Plunket Greene, Griswold and others. Good chapters on saltwater flyfishing by Arthur F. Bell and chub on the fly by John C. Moore. Chapters include: De maximis; 'Out of Macedonia'; If we started afresh; The travelling companion; The fly rod in North America; Fly fishing in Norway; Salmon and sea trout; Salmon fishing in Canada; The magnificence of the chub; Black bass on the fly rod; A talk about it; The sound of it; The colour of it; The poetry of it; De minimis. Hugh Tempest Sheringham, who died in mid-writing of this book, espoused this philosophy which the surviving editor, Mr. John C. Moore, notes: "Hugh Sheringham had little sympathy with the plutocrat who (his own words) 'bestrides our streams like a Colossus.' He liked to think of the fly-rod as something all men equally could enjoy." In one of this books, Sheringham opined concerning the "what and why" of grown men spending untold hours fishing: The artifice of fishing is displayed not only in the delusion of the fish, but to some extent in the delusion of the fisher also. Let him have the power of persuading himself that the boy in him has never grown up, or better, let it be so without his knowing it, and the world is his oyster.".
