Paperback. Condition: Good. I collect lakes. I have for years. I can't bring a lake home, like a butterly or baseball card and put it in a display case or album. So, I walk around each lake in one fell swoop. This way I can best capture and form an uninterrupted connection with the spirit of the water, the land, the people, and my inner self. Learning to Walk is a refreshingly original approach to the memoir. The author keeps a journal while walking, reflecting insightfully on both the present and the past. In the present he walks as far as seventy-eight miles in three days around Seneca Lake, and as little as one lap around the local reservoir. The intoxicating rhythm of walking leads to inner exploration and reflection. Whatever the external or internal distance covered, the author treats all with a singular respect and unassuming sensitivity. It may be present-day delights such as watching the aerial acrobatics of a red-tailed hawk, the satisfaction of covering thirty-nine miles in one day, or the confusion of a delinquent boyhood and struggling in boot camp. The author exemplifies the TS Eliot quote: "We must not cease from exploration and the end of all our exploring will be to arrive where we began and to know the place for the first time." In Richard Shade Gardner's walking and journaling, the "place" is physical and conceptual.Gardner has a finely-tuned finesse with episodic storytelling and dialogue, recounting observations and describing characters he meets. The book's 125 vignettes flow from present-to-past and back, keeping the reader in constant motion, much the same as a good long walk, and result in a book that is almost impossible to put down.…

Hardcover. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Fine. Fine unread condition red boards, black spine, and gold spine lettering contained in a fine condition color illustrated dust jacket. Includes Credits; Power Puzzle Answers and Index. Illustrated with black-and-white line drawings. "Are You Neglecting Your Most Powerful Resource? Now one book gathers from many different disciplines the most valuable information on the mind and its potential. By using these hundreds of tips, techniques, and tests, you can supercharge your mental power more than you ever thought possible. Boost Your Brainpower includes sections on these and other topics: Your I.Q.; The true mark of genius; Foundations of smart decision-making; Increasing creativity - the benefits of daydreaming; Keeping the brain young; Nutrition - vitamins for your brain; Memory and how to improve it; How to manage love, anger, and loneliness; How to listen and learn - the key to communication; Intuition - how to tap your inner voice; The body-mind connection; How to meditate to increase your awareness; How to use dreams to build your mind; Fine-tuning the five senses; Powers of ESP; Positive thinking to fight disease." - from the rear outer jacket. "Your brain is the most important organ in your body. But do you ever try to help it? Keeping your brain running smoothly, effectively, and powerfully is the key to a healthy, happy life. You can keep your mind in shape, just as you can keep your body in shape, by using the many techniques gathered in Boost Your Brainpower. You can increase your sense awareness, improve your memory, raise your testing scores, deepen you empathy, fine-tune your intuition, enlarge your vocabulary, broaden your knowledge, improve your health, and lift your spirits - and, as you will see in this eye-opening book, all these processes go hand in hand. The key to boosting your brainpower is exercise - exercising your mind. The mind is a lot like a muscle: if it is challenged often, it grows stronger; if it is allowed to idle, it shrinks and weakens. Many people never realize their full potential in life because they neglect the most important resource they have: their own minds. This survey of specific techniques and information collects results of research from all over the world into one volume: yoga, nutrition, chemicals, memory tricks, test-taking strategies, emotional patterns, motivation, psychic powers, vision and hearing enhancement, vocabulary growth, meditation, exercise, IQ tests - all these topics, and many more, are addressed in order to help you enhance your creativity, knowledge, health, success, and happiness. Supercharge your memory! Heal with your mind! Think more clearly! Learn faster! Become the master of your mind with Boost Your Brainpower." - from the inner front jacket flap. "This book can appreciably help you use your head to lead a happier, fuller life." - Albert Ellis, Ph.D., President, Institute for Rational-Emotive Therapy and author. "An important subject. The reader is guided to some valuable dream truths in a witty, captivating style." - Patricia Garfield, Ph.D., renowned dream expert and author. "Crammed full of helpful suggestions. This book will help optimize all your natural creativity and mental energy." - Stanley D. Frank, Ed.D., author. Ember, Kathi (illustrations); Shade, Denise M. (cover and interior designer); Rossiter, Richard (jacket design) (illustrator).…
