Condition: As New. Contents: Preface. Introduction. 1. The anatomy of a text. Mahendranath Gupta and the writing of the Sri Sri Ramakrishna Kathamrita. 2. The dialogic process. Sri Ramakrishna and social anxieties in late nineteenth century Bengal. 3. The religious worlds of Sri Ramakrishna. An historical and philosophical reapp…raisal: i. Universality and Sri Ramakrishna. ii. Sri Ramakrishna and Brahminical thought. An exploratory essay. Select bibliography. "In essence, this collection of essays represents a contribution towards the writing of social history, more so the social and intellectual history of religion. Thematically, these essays deal with the life and times of the famed Bengali mystic Sri Ramakrishna Paramhamsa (1836-86) and seek to bring out in clearer relief, the dialogic process that tied the saint to his many admirers, across time and tradition. One of the important arguments of this work is that while specific historical conjunctures as say the colonial society of late 19 century Bengal do explain why certain elements of the saint's life and teachings become attractive for several stratas in contemporary society, his popularity as a social being or importance as a religious figure has also to be understood outside such short term temporalities. Not all of the Ramakrishna that we know is the tendentious construction of the contemporary bhadralok. A good part of his appeal also seems to lie in the fact that his preachings and parables reflect a fairly continuous history of certain upper-caste cultural beliefs and practices." Soft cover. Condition: New. This is a short and accessible biography of Sarada Devi (18531920), the widow of Sri Ramakrishna Paramahamsa and a cultic leader in her own right. It is the work of a historian of modern Bengal and meant to serve as a corrective to the hagiographic slant that has hitherto permeated writings on the sub…ject. This book is about understanding religious charisma associated with an unschooled but dynamic woman who had ample courage, common sense and conviction, deftly combining in her person the roles of a social counsellor, a spiritual preceptor and a popular cultic leader. Though an orthodox Brahmin widow, Sarada Devi reveals an extraordinary openness and liberality in her everyday relationships, not hesitating to share food with her Western disciples or socialize with men and women from the marginalized castes and classes. Though never a mother herself, she played a tender motherly role towards many that eventually contributed to ascriptions of Divine Motherhood in her person. She was also a feminist who encouraged women to be free and self-reliant. Sarada Devi has been the inspiration behind the Sarada Math and Mission that, quite uniquely, combines the world of feminine spirituality and active social work for Indian women. This work is a study in the social and historical processes that made this possible.
