In "Anti-Ameicanism," a French intellectual comes to the defense of America (which is welcome), attributing most European anti-Americanism to disguised anti-capitalism on the part of Europeans who secretly favor totalitarianism over democracy (in which he's probably correct.) Unlike De Tocqueville, however, it appears Revel writes from Paris, and he gets a few details wrong, quoting a French police source for his report that the anarchic black market in arms in France is actually worse than the American system (possibly true) since "The officially condoned selling of arms to individuals in America at least makes provision for the registration of the purchaser's name, who must also pay for a license and be fingerprinted." While this describes the current (albeit unconstitutional) American system of MACHINE-GUN registration, and in some jurisdictions the set-up for acquiring a "concealed-carry permit," in fact most American gun owners of course purchased their legal arms without any fingerprinting or "licensing" . . . the victim-disarmament dreams of Nancy Pelosi and Dianne Feinstein notwithstanding. In our second volume, John Gibson's "Hating America," the TV host watches the foreign press after 9/11 -- not just in the Middle East, but also in Europe, Asia and Canada -- attacking America with "an off-the-charts level of venom, a scandalous parade of mistaken assumptions, an endless font of suspicion, mistrust, and the promulgation of outright, willful lies." 176 and 288 pp., respectively. Charmingly garish (but uncredited) cover art gives us a terrified blond(e) couple (love the polka-dot cravat) with shadow of gunman and his snub-nosed revolver on wall behind. Reading crease down center of spine; modest rub to all edges. Pages modestly age-toned, especially to edges. Book remains intact and easily read; no repairs currently needed, though any paperback of this vintage should be handled gingerly. OUR SECOND OFFERING IN THIS LOT, a 1969 softcover publication of la table ronde, Paris, is Jean Annouilh's play "Cher Antoine," a mass-market (sized) paperback with a removable dust jacket, said jaquette having been designed de Jean-Denis Malcles. Anouilh's play was presented for the first time in Paris on Oct. 1, 1969 at the Comedie des Champs-Elysees, and this edition of 8,975 copies (if we read the statement correctly) was printed on Nov. 3, 1969. The entire play (in French) here in 193 pp. This is a lovely copy with no reading creases that would grade "fine" except for one problem -- the book has a wave in it. When viewed from the top or bottom, entire book forms an "S" shape, with the dips measuring almost 1/8th inch (about 3 mm.) Doubtless caused by improper storage, this might be improved by tight shelving. A pair of French language paperback dramas, combined into a lot at one price to consolidate shipping, the pair now reduced from $20.

Jean II. von Monaco (genannt Der Herrliche") (* 1468; 11. Oktober 1505 in Monaco) aus der Familie der Grimaldi war von 1494 bis zu seinem Tode Herr von Monaco. Jean II. war der älteste von acht Söhnen von Lambert von Monaco und Claudine Grimaldi. Im Alter von 26 Jahren trat er 1494 die Nachfolge seines Vaters als Herr von Monaco an. In seinem politischen Handeln folgte Jean dem Vorbild seiner Vorfahren. Er unterstützte die französischen Könige, die mit dem Ziel gegen Italien ziehen, es zu erobern. Bei diesem Ziel steht Monaco durch seine Lage im Rampenlicht. Jean II. wird Kammerherr des Königs und Oberkommandierender der französischen Flotten. Jean förderte die Künste und Künstler, seine Schlösser in Monaco und Menton ließ er prächtig ausgestalten. Einer der Künstler, die besonders gefördert wurden, war der Maler Louis Bréa. Aufgrund seiner Launen war das Volk aber nicht sehr einverstanden mit seinem Herrscher. In Ventimiglia entging er knapp einem Attentat. Von den Schiffen kassierte er für den Transport von Getreide und Salz die Gabella-Steuer", dafür wurde er in Aix-en-Provence vor Gericht gebracht. Jean bestritt in Aix-en-Provence die Zuständigkeit der Gerichtsbarkeit, da er der Fürst eines selbständigen Staates sei und nur der Papst entscheiden dürfe, womit er in diesem Fall Erfolg hatte. In der Nacht vom 10. zum 11. Oktober 1505 wurde Jean im Palast von Monaco in einem eskalierenden Streit von seinem jüngeren Bruder Lucien angeblich in Notwehr erstochen. Dieser trat schließlich seine Nachfolge an. (Wikipedia).
