Superb B&W illustrations. Can't find publisher's name or date of publication but looks late Victorian and it is printed by Richard Clay of Bread Street Hill, London. Introduction date 1831 and a page about the book refered to as 'ground of' dated 1842. Larger format hardback edition without dustjacket. Clean bottle-green hardback binding with gold-coloured illustration to centre of both boards of what looks like an urn with a thistle on top with flag/banner to either side and an open book, goblet, helmet, mask etc. Gold-colour decorations of armorial and Scottish medieval weapons and a tartan and shield to spine. Light wear to spine-ends and boards' corners. Page-edges moderately browned and rough-cut as of period. Pages very clean and tidy,

Retains much of the original gilt border and all of the intricaqte blind stamping on front and rear cover. Marbled covers and end papers. Internally it is complete, nice and tight. Full page engraved frontispiece "Melrose" drawn JMW Turner RA, engraved W. Miller. Title piece engraving "Newark Castle" drawn JMW Turner RA engraved by W J Cooke. Both clean with no marking. Page 51 full page engraving "Branksome Tower" drawn D Copley Fielding, engraved W. Radclyffe. Page 79 Full page engraving "Melrose" Drawn G. Barret, engraved J. McGahey. Page 205 full page engraving "Rostin and Hawthornden" drawn JMW Turner RA, engraved by W.R. Smith. Last 3 engravings mentioned have some foxing and spotting mainly to margins very rather than the engraved area.

Rubbing and tearing at edges, hinges and corners, which are bumped. Tearing to head and tail of spine with a little loss. Some slackness to binding, some cracking to front inner hinge, extensively to rear inner hinge and partially to rear outer hinge, though holding and textblock reasonably firm. Gilt upper page edges, somewhat dulled, scuffed and marked. Lower and fore-edges browned, scuffed and otherwise marked. Seller label to front pastedown. Previous owner name to verso of front free endpaper and name and year to recto of second free endpaper. Some foxing throughout, more so towards extremities and to plates and pages opposite them. Otherwise, the odd mark to page surfaces, slight tanning, but generally clean, no underlining, marginalia, etc. See pictures for further information. xvi, 867 pp. n.
