Leather. Condition: Very Good Indeed. None (illustrator). Fourteen volumes of the Waverley Novels by Scottish writer Sir Walter Scott, bound in seven. Fourteen volumes of a twenty-six volume set, bound in seven. With a frontispiece to each novel. The Waverley novels are a long series of novels that, for nearly a century, were among the most popular and widely read novels in Europe. Written between 1814 and 1832, these historical novels influenced generations of writers and earned Scott his reputation as the founder of the historical novel genre. The earlier Waverley books deal with different phases of Scottish history and were noted for their characterizations of ordinary people and their use of regional Scottish dialect. Later editions were published with Scott"s prefaces and final revisions. Written by Sir Walter Scott, a Scottish novelist, poet and historian whose works remain classics of European and Scottish literature today. Edited by Peter Hately Waddell, a Scottish cleric and prolific writer who founded a congregation he called the "Church of the Future".
