Contact seller5-star sellerFirst edition (not stated per publisher's usual practice). xiv, 238 pages. Hardcover: H 19.25cm x L 13cm. Lacks dust jacket (as usual). Red cloth with white polka dots; some soiling and light staining to boards with slight bumping and wear to corners; spine cloth lightly sunned/faded but with black title label still retaining br…ight gilt stamping. Black top edge with some color bleed shallowly affecting some leaves at their top margins; toning to fore-edge and bottom edge; some staining to front endpapers likely by an aspiring gourmet; a few spots of light soiling and staining to interior pages. Binding is firm. Else a very good copy of a marvelous regional cookbook as well as a relatively early work on the subject for research at Tulane's Louisiana Collection indicates that probably fewer than ten Creole/New Orleans cookbooks preceded the Scott and Spratling effort. Bibliographical references: Bitting, page 424; Brown #1167. Cape and Smith issued 200 YEARS OF NEW ORLEANS COOKING in at least three binding variants of unknown priority - all with red cloth but with white polka dot diameters varying from a large 14mm pattern to this copy's 7mm size and the final permutation being dots of a diminutive 2mm. First edition copies are quite uncommon but this middle dot variation seems to be the most unusual followed by the small dot with the large dot being the most frequently encountered. Sewn-in black silk page marker embroidered with "Jonathan Cape & Harrison Smith" white lettering along with Foreword and seventeen full or half-page decorations, i.e. b/w sketch illustrations (including unpaged frontispiece) by William Spratling. Features fourteen text sections titled as "Appetizers," "Soups," "Entrees," "Oysters," "Crabs," "Shrimp," "Meat," "Poultry and Game," "Vegetables," "Sauces," "Salads and Dressings," "Desserts and Sweets," "Hot Breads," and "Beverages."
