Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book is a significant contribution to the understanding of the medieval Greek city of Thessalonica. The author draws on a wealth of primary sources, including unpublished documents from the Venetian archives, to provide a detailed and nuanced account of the city's political, social, and economic life from the early Byzantine period to the Ottoman conquest in the 15th century. The book is particularly valuable for its insights into the role of the city's commercial elite in shaping urban politics and society. The author argues that Thessalonica's merchant oligarchy was able to maintain a significant degree of autonomy from both the Byzantine state and the Latin Empire of Constantinople, which ruled the city for a time during the 13th and 14th centuries. This autonomy allowed the city's merchants to develop a distinctive political culture and legal framework that prioritized the interests of the commercial elite and ensured the city's continued prosperity. The book also explores the role of the city's Jewish and Muslim communities, which played an important role in the city's economy and society. The author argues that these communities were largely integrated into the city's social and economic life, and that they enjoyed a degree of religious tolerance that was unusual for the time. Overall, this book is a major contribution to the study of medieval Greek history and urbanism. It provides a wealth of new information about the city of Thessalonica and its role in the broader history of the Byzantine Empire and the Mediterranean world.
