The cartoons and text illustrate a sarcastic and cynical view of the Japanese invasion. Sapajou was the artistic nom-de-plume of Georgii Avksentievich Sapojnikoff, a former lieutenant of the Russian Imperial Army. In the early 1920s, like so many of his compatriots, he came to Shanghai and joined the North China Daily News as a cartoonist in 1925.
