The Stone Canoe: Two Lost Mi'kmaq Texts; translated by Elizabeth Paul; with essays, notes and supporting material by Peter Sanger; and illustrations by Alan Syliboy; Gaspereau Press, Kentville NS, Printers & Publishers, Beati Anni Decimi, MMVII. 4th printing. From the first chapter, Looking for Someone Who sees, by Peter Sanger This is a book of stories. One of the stories could be said to end with words which became attached to it during the course of its most dramatic surviving telling Indian legends in Micmac & English written down from the mouth of Susan Bafs in PEI in 1857. A second story could be said to start with words in a letter dated June 1884 the old man Steven says he knows some Indian stories but he thinks perhaps you may have them. These two stories are the endings and beginnings of many others I will also try to tell in this book. Some I will only be able to suggest in fragments of names and facts without much narrative substantiality. Others I will be able to tell more completely, and there will remain some stories I cannot tell which we re-make with our own lives. The story of 1847 is probably the earliest piece of indigenous Canadian literature recorded in its original language. To read either story aloud, in Mi'kmaq, is to speak with a voice which has been thought to be lost. It is the voice of those who are authority in North American indigenous culture, the voice of our ancestors. This book, 183 pages, is in fine condition. It is a very desirable, but very scarce, book illustrated by the incredibly talented Alan Syliboy.

Rand.transcribed stories from Mi'kmaq storytellers. 87 of these stories were published [in 1894] as 'Legends of the Micmacs'. Until recently, it appeared that none of Rand's early transcriptions in the original Mi'kmaq had survived.Peter Sanger uncovered two manuscripts among the Rand holdings at Acadia University. as told by Susan Barss in 1847 [and] in 1884 by a storyteller known as.Old Man Stevens. Both are among the earliest examples of indigenous Canadian literature recorded in their original language; the 1847 transcript being perhaps the earliest. At the heart of 'The Stone Canoe' are the two stories themselves, newly translated and transliterated by Elizabeth Paul, a Mi'kmaq speaker and teacher. Also included are supporting documents, including Rand's original interlinear notes, his final published versions. essays by Sanger.artwork by Syliboy, a Millbrook First Nation artist." (From the cover notes.) An interesting study in oral literature, narrative and translation. Signed by Co-authors.
