But unlike the plant he would regurgitate a transformed image that unmasked internal realities that the heads all attempted to keep private, remain camouflaged. During the past 12 months I was pimping for Lucas, something I had done in the past. The first response from the subjects was invariably. Do I have to take my clothes off?I assured them that this time all he wanted was their heads. In his series Sittings (1978-1980) he wanted them stripped bare. Essentially an auto-portraitist, Samaras expanded his repertory in Sittings to include his friends. It began after the completion of his Photo-transformations (1973-1976) in which he employed the Polaroid SX-70 camera to create tiny tableaux where he transformed himself in multiple incarnations ranging from extravagant beauties to grotesque monstrosities.
