"Advertisement depicting a view looking toward the rear of the busy store. Shows bookcases filled with texts mounted atop cabinets and drawers lining the walls. Stacks of books and eight…busts of prominent literary figures, including Shakespeare, adorn the tops of the cases. A clerk works from within and patrons surround a U-shaped central book display that contains a 'Gifts' case. Patrons include men, women, and children. The individuals receive assistance at the case, peruse books on the shelves, carry their purchases, converse, and make payment at the cashier booth. The booth, enclosed with ornate white iron work, contains advertising text that reads 'A Gift with Each Book Sold at Retail Price.' Store signage is also displayed on three banners stretching across the ceiling. Additional advertising text includes 'Gift Book Sales Originated by G.G. Evans' 1854.' View also shows a ladder leaning against a bookcase, chandeliers, and a parquet floor" (Library Company of Philadelphia, Philadelphia on Stone Digital Catalogue). Philadelphia on Stone 385. Matted & framed size 22" x 27". Some toning, a few light creases. Small repair in upper right corner. This lithograph is one in a series of Civil War scenes in…and around Baltimore by Sachse. Fort Federal Hill (of 1812 fame) was used by the 6th Massachusetts Militia and elements of Cook's Light Artillery of Boston under the command of General Benjamin F. Butler. Baltimore's loyalty to the Union was in question, and the fort served as a means of controlling the city. Rear board has a printed letter sheet from David Bendann's Fine Art Rooms, 105 E. Baltimore St. Number 40590. Bendann's Gallery Framed this piece. Refs: H. Furlong Baldwin Library, Maryland Center for History and Culture; Collection no. 1988.61.

Art, Prints & Posters. Condition: Good. First Edition. Original hand colored lithograph. Matted & framed size 16" x 24". Some toning. Contemporary signature of Lieutenant Colonel John H. Hyatt, Commandant of the Post, July 22, 1863". "Colored lithograph by E. Sachse & Co., one of two prominent lithography companies in Baltimore…in mid-1800's, that features Fort Marshall in Baltimore. This lithograph is one in a series of Civil War scenes in and around Baltimore by Sachse. Fort Marshall was constructed in the early part of the Civil War as one of the eastern defenses of the city. It occupied what was known as Snake Hill in the neighborhood of Foster Ave. and Conkling Sts. All traces of the fortification have long since disappeared. In this view looking toward the west and southwest may be seen the lower harbor, Fort McHenry to the left, the old Light Street Bridge at Ferry Bar and on the right the greater part of the city itself. According to Scharf's History of Maryland, the fort mounted from 50 to 60 guns of 32- and 42-pounders, in addition to Columbiads. In June 1863, because of the approach of Confederate troops to Baltimore, there was great activity here. Had Baltimore been captured, Scharf says it was the intention of the Federal Officers to fire upon the city from Fort Marshall."
