Soft cover. Condition: Fine. 1st Edition. 1st Printing. Signed. 215 pages. Published in 1997. Exhibition Monograph, designed as an Artist Book. One of the best books on the multi-faceted art and achievement of Bill Viola. The First Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions, of which there are several. Published in a small and limited first print run as a softcover original only. Without DJ, as issued. The First Edition is now scarce. Published on the occasion of the eponymous exhibition held at the Whitney Museum of American Art in 1997, which gave him his very first major show. Presents "Bill Viola". The pioneering AND leading video-cum-installation artist of the 20th century. "His video installations, which are total environments that envelop the viewer in image and sound, are distinguished by their precision and direct simplicity. Since the early 1970's, Viola has used video to explore the phenomenon of sense perception as an avenue towards self-knowledge. Clearly at odds with the cynicism of his age, his works focus on universal human experiences - birth, death, the unfolding of consciousness - and have roots in Eastern and Western art as well as Sufism, Christian mysticism, and Zen Buddhism. Viola's achievement is that of an artist who began in a new field, unbound by tradition and dogma, and who arrived, twenty-five years later, deeply enmeshed in a series of intersecting spiritual traditions, both ancient and contemporary. Features a dynamic and visually rich selection of works from 1972 to 1996" (Publisher's blurb). Bill Viola died, tragically, of Alzheimer's on July 12, 2024 at the age of 73. He is irreplaceable. An absolute "must-have" title for Bill Viola collectors. This copy is very boldly and beautifully signed, dated, and inscribed in black pen-marker on the title page by the artist: "For B - Have fun in Java, from Bill Viola, 23 June 1999". It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page. The recipient, who is named, is a colleague and friend of the artist, and cannot be named here. Because he himself had spent some time there, Bill Viola also added a lovely sketch of Java Island, including Borobodur Temple, and indicated it as such in black pen-marker. This title is a great art book. As far as we know, this is the only such signed, dated, and inscribed copy (with Original Drawing) of the First Edition/First Printing available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright. Please note: Copies available online have serious flaws or are in subsequent printings. This is surely an accessible and lovely alternative. A rare signed copy thus. Lavishly illustrated with 272 plates. One of the greatest artists of the 20th century. A fine collectible copy. ISBN 2080136453. Signed by Author.
