Red Cloth. Condition: Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. First Edition. Jacket a little worn and chipped at the edges, a couple of small tears (2cm) from top edge, one from bottom edge. Slight lean to spine. In southern Italy, where the mountains plunge steeply down into the Mediterranean, a prior once died while defending and hiding a holy relic from pursuing bandits. The village of Sant' Antonio grew up in this place. Sant' Antonio is the setting of 'The Holy Foot' - Sant' Antonio as it was in the Middle Ages, which is very near to being Sant' Antonio as it is today. An old man digging in a vineyard turns up a fragment of a white and beautiful foot, and his recognition of it as the relic is supported by a miraculous cure in the village. But while its recovery and the fame it will bring are being celebrated with wine and music and dancing in the little piazza, there arrives back from the pagan and exotic Kingdom of Sicily a young friar. He, on seeing the foot, declares it to be part of a Greek statue, and a heathen thing. The villagers are outraged, and the clash of ideas between them and the friar continues, with a steadily mounting tension, until the bishop arrives with his retinue, winding up the mountain road like a cortege painted by Benozzo Gozzoli. By that time the people's fever is shared by the reader: he feels their conflicting emotions deeply, and shares with them the dramatic events of the sotry's climax. Size: 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall.
