Manuscript / Paper Collectible
Condition: Near-fine. Toned. A sex education booklet for married couples in 1928, written in a friendly casual tone. Warns against bringing venereal disease into a marriage, and urges men to "move cautiously, considerately, [and] humanely" on his wedding night in respect of his young wife's "maidenly modesty" (p. 8). Provides an overview of basic reproductive anatomy, and openly addresses society's reluctance to discuss birth control: "A federal law, old and foolish like many other laws which we have outgrown, but which is upheld and brandished by a few puritanical folks who can't possibly see the sun because of the size of their noses, keeps us from telling married folks how best to keep from having babies. The joke of it is that most married folks, and, in fact, most young folks, already know most of the standard methods . Most physicians nowadays will gladly advise . He dare not, however, print or publish this advice. Hence you won't find it in this book" (pp. 12-3). A rare open acknowledgment of the taboo of sex and birth control c.1928. Single vol. (6" by 4.5"), pp. 15, [1], stapled in original printed wrps. N.B.: this is not simply an innocent sex education booklet. Note the involvement of Albert Dezel, who toured the country showing sex films under the guise of sex education in order to avoid the film censors. Publications like this would have lent legitimacy to his operation.
