There were 102 penalties for misdemeanours ranging from £1 to £5, including drowning cats and dogs and throwing them into the canal which attracted a £1 penalty. A number of Constables patrolled the canal, presumably looking out for transgressors and fining them appropriately - the traffic wardens of the 19th century!
