Hardcover. Condition: Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. ix, [1], 266, [10] pages. Illustrations. The dust jacket is in a worn plastic sleeve. The author was the Chief of the U.S. Secret Service, retiring in 1961 after nearly 13 years as Chief. Urbanus Edmund Baughman (May 21, 1905 November 6, 1978) was the chief of the United States Secret Service between 1948 and 1961, under Presidents Truman, Eisenhower, and Kennedy. Baughman was the first Secret Service Chief to pen a memoir concerning the office. Entitled Secret Service Chief, it was commented on the intricacies and inner workings of the Secret Service and its evolution from a counterfeit detection department to the presidential protection unit. Baughman was appointed to head the Secret Service by President Harry S. Truman shortly after the 1948 election. Baughman appeared on What's My Line? in 1955, before he was to be honored by the White House and appeared in Look magazine. He also appeared on To Tell The Truth in 1957. Derived from a Kirkus review: U.E. Baughman, the retired Chief of the U.S. Secret Service (he served in that top post for 13 years) tells the story of his government career, with great concentration on his experiences since 1948. A recent dynamic attempt on President Kennedy's life, prior attempts on Truman, Eisenhower, and other dignitaries' lives, counterfeiters, cranks and pranksters -- all these crowd into a book absolutely packed with colorful, exciting, and sometime disturbing anecdotes. While explaining the work of the Secret Service in recent times, and enhancing the story with his own experiences and thoughts, Baughman also proves a keen observer of the personalities he encounters. The three presidents he has guarded are all characterized in personal ways which make them highly human. The rush, the pomp circumstance of Washington life is not overlooked either. Yet through all of it stalks the menace of the insane, the criminal, the intriguer---ready to kill high officers, to flood the U.S. with false currency, or in other ways to pit themselves against the efficient, quiet forces of the Secret Service. Very good reading. First Edition [stated]. Presumed first printing.
