The autobiography of Field-Marshal Sir William Robert Robertson (1860-1933), who was a British Army officer who served as Chief of the Imperial General Staff (CIGS) - the professional head of the British Army from 1916 to 1918 during the First World War. He is the only soldier in the history of the British Army to have risen from the rank of private to its highest rank of field-marshal.

Robertson was the firstand still onlyman to rise through the enlisted ranks to become a British Field-Marshal. He served as Chief of the Imperial General Staff (CIGS) from 1915 to 1918. As a staunch 'westerner', he firmly believed the war could be won only on the Western Front and opposed diversions to other theaters. He frequently clashed with political leadership, notably Prime Minister David Lloyd George, over strategy and troop deployment.
