Paperback. Condition: Good. Faithful: The Robert and Eleanor Palmer Story chronicles the Palmers' early roots as children from the Midwest during The Great Depression. It follows their journey to Bible College at Central Bible Institute in Springfield, Missouri where the authors met and would later marry, to serving as assistant pastors in St. Louis and starting a family with the birth of their son, Paul. Faithful then describes the details that led them to be senior pastors in Dunn, North Carolina where there family grew to be a family of four with the birth of their daughter, Phyllis. We then find them relocating to a church in Lee's Summit, Missouri which they also helped to build as well as pastor. All throughout the book there is the theme of service and faithfulness. Eleanor was right there with Bob, lifting up his ministry with her own ministry of music, whether it be playing the organ or the piano or the accordian or leading the choir. There were other calls to churches in the Midwest until the Palmers ultimately received the call to go West, where they have been for the past 37 years at two different churches. With each move to each new city and church, whether it was for 5 years or 11 years or more, The Palmers always listened to the still small voice within and were guided by their God.This book exemplifies steadfastness, trust and faithfulness. The underlying story of being faithful to the purpose to which God had called them is a true testimony of the Palmers' lives. Faithful also describes their lives after pastoring in the pulpit and how they helped be pastors to pastors to hundreds of ministers. The book also delves into their work in overseas missions and contains an informative history of the Assemblies of God.…

Comprehensive yet compact and user-friendly, the fourth edition of Introduction to Communication Disorders takes a unique lifespan perspective that enables students to focus both on disorders and also on how these disorders impact on the lives of individuals. Research updates and revisions throughout the text, including over 400 new and relevant research studies, keeps the book current and relevant in an ever-changing field. Best practices boxes in each chapter cover the ideal assessment and intervention process for each disorder discussed and offer students a quick and easy-to-read reference. Website references in each chapter allow readers to further explore topics relating to communication disorders on the Internet. New diagrams and figures illustrate the locations of various disorders, especially those with a neurological basis. New communication disorders have been added, including childhood motor speech disorders and other language disorders, making the text more comprehensive. A redesigned companion website is now more user-friendly and better helps students learn the material included in the text and explore additional websites of interest. …

Paperback. Condition: Good. Is Christianity a bland, domesticated religion, unthreatening and easy to grasp? Or is it the most exotic, unexpected, and uncanny of religious paths? For the mystics and saints -- and for Robert Barron who discovered Christianity through them -- it is surely the strangest way. At its very center, writes Barron, is a God who comes after us with a reckless abandon, breaking open his own heart in love in order to include us in the rhythm of his own life. What could be more compelling.…

Paperback. Condition: Good. An exploration of shamanism and the archetypal symbolism that sits at the foundation of all human life - Not just an academic work. Helps the reader experience the actual mindset of the shaman - Presents a cohesive view of the recurrent patterns of symbolism and visionary experience that underlie all religion The human psyche contains archetypal patterns largely lost to contemporary society but which shamans have employed for over 30,000 years to gain access to the spiritual world. Shamanic symbols both affect and reflect these durative patterns that exist, with uncanny similarity, in civilizations separated by expanses of time and distance. The Strong Eye of Shamanism draws together the many facets of the art of shamanism, presenting a cohesive view of the recurrent patterns of symbolism and visionary experience that underlie its practice. The strong eye of the title refers to the archetypal symbolism that sits at the foundation of all human life--whether in Paleolithic caves or today's temples. The author asserts that society has become separated from the power of those symbols that lead us into deeper understanding of our spirituality. In today's world of splintered psyches, a world in which people are in search of their souls, shamanism survives as an age-old technology of soul recovery, a living Rosetta stone that reminds us of the shared foundation that exists beneath even the most radically different perspectives. Through its study of shamanism, archetypal psychology, and symbolism, The Strong Eye of Shamanism encourages individuals--and society--to look inward and remember that the deepest forms of awareness begin with the knowledge that the answers reside within us.…

Paperback. Condition: Good. Today's financial crisis is the result of dismal failures on the part of regulators, market analysts, and corporate executives. Yet the response of the American government has been to bail out the very institutions and individuals that have wrought such havoc upon the nation. Are such massive bailouts really called for? Can they succeed? Robert E. Wright and his colleagues provide an unbiased history of government bailouts and a frank assessment of their effectiveness. Their book recounts colonial America's struggle to rectify the first dangerous real estate bubble and the British government's counterproductive response. It explains how Alexander Hamilton allowed central banks and other lenders to bail out distressed but sound businesses without rewarding or encouraging the risky ones. And it shows how, in the second half of the twentieth century, governments began to bail out distressed companies, industries, and even entire economies in ways that subsidized risk takers while failing to reinvigorate the economy. By peering into the historical uses of public money to save private profit, this volume suggests better ways to control risk in the future. Additional Columbia / SSRC books on the privatization of risk and its implications for Americans: Health at Risk: America's Ailing Health System--and How to Heal ItEdited by Jacob S. Hacker Laid Off, Laid Low: Political and Economic Consequences of Employment InsecurityEdited by Katherine S. Newman Pensions, Social Security, and the Privatization of RiskEdited by Mitchell A. Hardback. Condition: Good. Although Calvin Coolidge is widely judged to have been a weak and even an incompetent president, this study concludes that he was a leader disabled by a crippling emotional breakdown. After an impressive early career, Coolidge assumed the presidency upon the death of Warren Harding. His promising political career suffered a major blow, however, with the death of his favorite child, 16-year-old Calvin Jr., in July 1924. Overwhelmed with grief, Coolidge showed distinct signs of clinical depression. Losing interest in politics, he served out his term as a broken man. This is the first account of Coolidge's life to compare his behavior before and after this tragedy, and the first to consider the importance of Coolidge's mental health in his presidential legacy.Gilbert carefully documents the dramatic change in Coolidge's leadership style, as well as the changes in his personal behavior. In his early career, Coolidge worked hard, was progressive, and politically astute. When he became Vice President in 1921, he impressed the Washington establishment by being strong and activist. After Harding's death, Coolidge took control of his party, dazzled the press, distanced himself from the Harding scandals, and showed ability in domestic and foreign policy. His son's death would destroy all of this. Gilbert documents Coolidge's subsequent dysfunctional behavior, including sadistic tendencies, rudeness and cruelty to family and aides, and odd interactions with the White House staff.…

Paperback. Condition: Good. The new edition of Reys' Helping Children Learn Mathematics examines the forthcoming Common Core Standards and refocuses the themes for the book to make sure they are timely, significant and parallel in form. The three themes threaded throughout the book are: Best Practices, Sense Making and Practical Experiences. Other updates include new entries in the Book Nooks; an expanded list of Book Nook recommendations; updated references including all research citations; and links from the narrative to appropriate intact lessons that currently are in Teaching Elementary Mathematics: A Resource for Field Experiences.…
