The original, undated [1896], Very Good 8vo. hardback copy in green cloth, attractively illustrated with telephone wires/poles, and blocked in four colours with gilt title to upper board, featuring a man and boy "OFF TO THE GOLD DIGGINGS" Similarly coloured spine with illustration of on-board sailor and pennant. Cover shows some light signs of handling but is tight, bright and strong. Plain end-papers with small neat imprint of a Norwich bookseller. Very well illustrated throughout with 34 fine engravings (many full page), chapter heads and vignettes. 295pp. Heavy industry to domestic appliances are illustrated (see listing) with an apparent emphasis on guns. Naysmyth's Steam-hammer, Bessemer Process, Krupp's 15.6 Breech-loading Gun, the Worcester Royal Porcelain Works and The Great Eastern and Persia ships are featured for instance as is a marvellous, surly-looking Edison (with his phonograph).
