(Advertisement for St. Nicholas Magazine on rear exterior *********************************************** In 1844 Eliakim Littell started publishing "Littell's Living age", a weekly literary journal. Mostly it was excerpts from works - both magazine and books - published elsewhere. At times correspondents purported to share material, and sometimes there were bits and snatches of literary news. Trying to place this periodical in the scheme of things, I guess I would say it was a distant forerunner of periodicals like "The Reader's Digest", only with a higher literary pretension. *********************************************** Just peruse the table of contents for this issue to understand the nature of this antique periodical :: ~ THE PROTESTANT RESTORATION IN FRANCE IN THE LAST CENTURY -- (from "Fraser's Magazine" ) // ~ JACK AND THE BEANSTALK, PART 1 -- by Miss Thackeray -- (from "Cornhill Magazine" ) Miss Thackeray (Lady Anne Isabella Thackeray Ritchie, 1837 - 1919) was the eldest daughter of English novelist, William Makepeace Thackeray. She was an esteemed writer in her own right, penning novels, essays, and social criticism. She had a good knack for taking old folk-tales -such as this "Jack and the Beanstalk" , and revising them to reflect conditions in her time. Thus in this story Jack is a tenant farmer struggling against the greed of his landlord (the Giant). Presented here is Part One of the story. // ~ TURKISH GEORGIA (From "Cornhill Magazine" ) The author of this piece of reportage was identified in "Cornhill Magazine" as W.G.P. This was William Gifford Palgrave (1826 - 1888). In 1862 Palgrave had traveled through the interior of Arabia, which at that time was totally unknown (Terra Incognito) to the Western World. He was fluent in colloquial Arabic, and thus disguised as a Syrian physician he made his way with a small supply of medicines and the sort into the heart of Najd, where he became friends with Faisla bin Turki, the then ruler of Najd. It was a danger -filled journey, Palgrave almost didn't make it out - but he did, and wrote a book about his adventures. In this essay about Georgia, he meant to correct the sad, and somewhat thoughtless, dismissal of that country by historian Gibbons. // ~ THE REGENT ORLEANS AND HIS AGE ( from "Temple Bar" ) - by the Author of "Mirabeau" This is an essay of which the style could stand in the King of Purple Prose // ~ NICOLE VAGNON - PART 1 - (from "Temple Bar") - A Story by Katharine Sarah Macquoid (Novelist, 1824 - 1917) Her most famous novel was Patty . She also wrote travel books which were illustrated by her husband, Thomas Robert Macquoid. // ~ THE OLD CATHOLIC CONGRESS AT CONSTANCE -- (from "The Saturday Review" ) // ~ THE LESSONS OF THE AMERICAN MONETARY CRISIS (from The Economist ) // ~ VICTOR EMANUEL'S RECEPTION IN VIENNA AND BERLIN (from "The Spectator" ) // ~ POETRY : An Ode by Arthur O'Shaughnessy; Gathered Ferns by H.J.L. ************************************************* CONDITION GOOD ONLY This is a previously owned periodical that remains clean and presentable.

Putnam's Sons in 1908 and appears to be a First Edition but is not specifically stated as such. This is an ex-library copy, has no dust jacket, and is in good condition with pages that are yellowing and some library wear. It is 5 5/8" by 8 1/4" and has 291 pages with three portraits in it: Felicia Hemans, William Makepeace Thackeray, and "Jacob Omnium" and Marshal Pelissier. "Readers of my father's works will be familiar with the name of the Fairy Blackstick who lived in Crim Tartary some ten or twenty thousand years ago, and who used to frequent the Court of His Majesty King Valoroso XXIV. If I have ventured to call the following desultory papers by the Fairy Blackstick's name, it is because they concern certain things in which she was interested - old books, young people, schools of practical instruction, rings, roses, sentimental affairs, etc., etc." Thank you!

Hardcover. Condition: Good. Published in 1881, bound in a quarter leather binding bound by Birdsall and Son of Northampton, this copy bearing the bookplate of its original owner, Lady Charlotte Schreiber, Lady Charlotte Elizabeth Guest (née Bertie; 19 May 1812 ? 15 January 1895), later Lady Charlotte Schreiber, was an English aristocrat who is best known as the first publisher in modern print format of the Mabinogion, the earliest prose literature of Britain. Guest established the Mabinogion as a source literary text of Europe, claiming this recognition among literati in the context of contemporary passions for the chivalric romance of King Arthur and the Gothic movement. The name Guest used for the book was derived from a mediaeval copyist's error, already established in the 18th century by William Owen Pughe and the London Welsh societies. The book is a small slim format, marking to both boards, small piece missing from lower corner of rear board, internally noticeable foxing to endpapers a few creased page corners else in good acceptable condition. this is a lighter book, overseas shipping costs will be reduced at checkout where possible.
Hardcover. Condition: Good. Maroon w/gilt lettering and elaborate spine decoration. Minor bumping and light rub to head and heel of spine. Closed outside edges, endpapers and first three pages of text show light foxing, the occasional spot throughout. Text is otherwise clean and bright. Tissue guarded frontis and two other portraits. Named for The Fairy Blackstick in Thackeray's 'The Rose and the Ring' , this book is a collection of essays which the author (the daughter of William Makepeace Thackeray) explains are"certain things in which she was interested; old books, young people, schools of practical instruction, rings, roses, sentimental affairs, etc.,etc.".

Soft cover. Condition: Very Good. Engravings (illustrator). First Edition. Boston:Ticknor & Fields, 1867. The January 26, 1867 issue (Vol. III, No. 56) of Every Saturday. 10 1/2" x 7", newsprint wraps, 32 pp. + ads. Very Good; some corner wear and age toning (see scans), but sturdy and supple. A robust example. An extraordinarily scarce original wraps copy of Every Saturday, a literary journal which is found, when it is found, almost always as six-monthly hardbound aggregations. Every Saturday was the weekly offering of Fields & Osgood after Ticknor & Fields; each of which offered, in the publisher's words, "choice reading selected from current foreign literature" - i.e., usually reprints from similar overseas journals, generally English ones. This issue includes the typical variety of topics; please see cover-listed contents on scan. Most Every Saturday entries were reprinted from foreign journals, and occasionally became the first American appearance of works of some famous (or to-become-famous) authors, such as Jules Verne and Charles Dickens. Herein is a pre-publication chapter of "The Village on the Cliff" by Anne Isabella Thackeray Ritchie, though she is credited only as "Miss Thackeray"; five pre-publication chapters of Henry Kingsley's "Silcote of Silcotes"; and two pre-publication chapters of Edmund Yates' "Black Sheep", as well as a number of other literary diversions (see scanned image of the contents), and eight pages of quaint ends, four at the beginning and four at the end. A piece of publishing history. L-ES1.
