Detailed study of the natural history of the Lothian, Fife and Stirling area of the River Forth, including mammals, birds and habitat. The Vertebrate Fauna of Scotland was begun by J A Harvie-Brown intending to study each river catchment area in the country; some areas were completed by other naturalists as he died before his work was finished, and Rintoul and Baxter were requested to take up the task.

Written by Leonora Jeffrey Rintoul, a Scottish ornithologist and rare female member of the Royal Society of Edinburgh, and Evelyn Vida Baxter, a Scottish naturalist and ornithologist, and the first woman to receive Union Medal of the British Ornithological Union. The pair are closely associated and considered "constant partners" in their co-authorship of works. They were lifelong friends, and together they studied bird migration for twenty years, which led to several publications, including renowned work The Birds of Scotland in 1953.
