Paperback. Condition: Very Good. For everyone who has looked up at the stars on a clear night and longed to know more about them, here is the perfect introduction and guide to discovering the stars. Discover the Stars leads you on a tour of all the stars and constellations visible with the naked eye and introduces you to deep-sky objects that can be seen with binoculars or a simple telescope. The tour is conducted by the editor of Astronomy magazine, Richard Berry, whose two-color, computer-plotted sky maps and clear instructions make stargazing fun and productive from your first night out. The heart of Discover the Stars is two sections of big, beautiful sky maps and charts. The first section features twelve maps that show the entire sky overhead as it appears during each month of the year. These outline all the constellations visible anywhere in the Northern Hemisphere, and the accompanying text reveals the rich ancient mythology that surrounds the star groups. The second section is made up of twenty-three star charts that depict smaller regions of the sky in great detail. These charts give the names of key stars and lead you to fascinating features such as stars with unusual colors, double stars, variable stars, nebulae, and galaxies. Separate chapters cover basics, such as how the stars move through the sky, how to find your way around the moon and the planets, making an astronomer's flashlight, and choosing and using a telescope -- all in terms that are easy to grasp and remember. Discover the Stars is the perfect introduction to the heavens, simple enough to be useful if you're just starting out but packed with enough information to keep you learning and enjoying the stars for years to come.…

Paperback. Condition: Good. These 123 tales reflect the rich oral tradition of West African folklore. Playful and sly, they teem with talking animals and shape-shifting tricksters, with pacts and promises made and broken, and with impossible deeds done through chicanery and magic. These tales deal with themes common throughout West Africa and the world. Indeed, American readers will recognize such characters as Brer Rabbit and the "tar baby," which had their roots in the folklore of this region. Because there is no overlay of Western values, however, some of the morals may surprise the unsuspecting reader--murder and polygamy, cannibalism and cunning, witchcraft and revenge spin matter-of-factly throughout the stories.…

Paperback. Condition: Good. Four assignments, copious tears, unspeakable joy, thousands of miles across South America from the mysterious and ancient ruins of Machu Picchu in the cloud shrouded Andes, to the remote villages on the Amazon River, as well as cities in the Amazon Jungle only accessible by plane or boat, Richard and Cheryle Whitaker faithfully completed the last of their four assignments in South America. Tirelessly they served the Lord in various capacities, never wavering, but with resolution they faced the daunting task of developing and building the Quito, Ecuador Employment Resource Center, and later the development of a Perpetual Education Fund program for the countries of Colombia, Ecuador, Venezuela, Peru and Bolivia. Uruguay was their fourth and final assignment where Cheryle supervised the mission office, and Richard served as a counselor and companion to the mission president. The pages of this account almost quiver with details you rarely hear or read in mission reports. Richard is refreshingly, almost shockingly, straightforward and honest as he appropriately tosses into the trash the proverbial rose-colored glasses in his recounting of their experiences. The joys, the challenges, the frustrations, the foibles of human nature in leadership, the physical dangers that they both faced time and time again is palpable, and intense, leaving you with no doubt as to their commitment to their covenants to sacrifice and love the Lord and His work. Unspoken is the selfless service exhibited by both, but most especially by Cheryle who subjugated and subdued her mother's heart to leave her children and grandchildren again and again, year after year. Although their final assignment was fraught with physical and emotional difficulties that dramatically included Cheryle being robbed on the street and her suffering a near fatal fall down a flight of seventeen stairs in the mission home, she never complained, but put her trust in the Lord. This is Volume 3-Journey to the Land of the Inca-from Whitaker's A Remarkable Journey series. It is more than a journal or a memoir. It is a legacy for all time and all people, but primarily for their children and grandchildren, and those who follow. It is their footprint in history's sands of time and in the building up of the Kingdom of God in the South American countries. When the final page is turned and the book is held in your hands-or more likely to your heart-there will be no doubt that Richard and Cheryle will long be remembered, respected, appreciated, loved and missed for the love and service they rendered, and the sacrifice they faithfully and willingly gave of time, means, energy and health to fill their Errand from the Lord.…

Paperback. Condition: Good. From the depths of L.A.'s crime ridden streets to the heights of conversations with God, Richard Berry Whitaker's journey as a member of the LAPD and a devoted member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints will invite you to witness his life, work, growth, challenges, grief, and ultimate triumph and faith in a living, loving God and His Son, Jesus Christ. You will witness Whitaker's close brushes with death time and again, where, like a cat with nine lives, he survives even more. You will feel the whisperings of Spirit as he is saved from death's cold fingers while angels protect him in tangible embraces. You will laugh one moment, read breathlessly the next and end your reading time wiping tears of joy or comfort or bittersweet sorrow. When the last page is turned and your last tissue tossed, you will know you have walked with the angels who watched over a man who loves God, family and country, and who defied the bounds of mortality because of the warriors from the other side who stood guard to assist him in completing his mortal ministry and mission. Your time will be well spent in the pages of this book, and your faith strengthened in a God who hears and answers prayers. …
