Published in 1964 by Atheneum. Small folio (14.5" x 11"), silver gilt debossed boards, 84 unnumbered pages, over 60 b/w gravure illustrations. Book design by Marvin Israel. In its original slipcase. Signed by Avedon in blue pen on the title page. Light bumping and rubbing to extremities. Front joint split at top. Some bumping and soiling to slipcase, with closed tear to rear joint. El tiempo, la vejez y sus tensiones, resultan ser el motivo fundamental en la obra de Avedon. Vemos en su arte cómo nos habla directamente del paso del tiempo y su influencia en el ser humano, y, cómo no, del camino hacia la muerte. Son esos retratos descontextualizados que aparecen ante la cámara sin maquillaje, fatigados o tristes, tal y como se encuentran en ese momento, los que claramente denotan esta inquietud. Su método era sencillo pero efectivo, la derrota anímica del contrario fotografiado a través de largas y cansadas sesiones de hasta cuatro horas. Reportedly Avedon hated this edition despite it being designed by Marvin Israel. A clean near fine copy in wrappers with a small former owner signature to the front free endpaper and some slight bumping to the bottom right corner and some other minor wear. Still, a very nice copy of this fairly uncommon version of this classic.
