Rhoades was a pioneer of early genetics, and worked with Barbara McClintock on the genetics of maize for which she later won the 1983 Nobel Prize in physiology or Medicine for the discovery of genetic transposition. In 1982 Rhoades was awarded the Thomas Hunt Morgan Medal for a lifetime's contribution to genetics. Most of the papers bear the signature or rubber stamp of early geneticist Norman Horowitz.
