Contact seller4-star sellerOctavo, blue cloth (hardcover), 343 pp. Very Good, with light foxing (age darkening). From introduction: In October, 1903, I was in Washington, DC, attending a conference of the bishops of the Anglican Communion having dioceses in the United States, Canada, the West Indies and south of the Rio Grande. The term of Sanford B. Dole, the first governor of the Territory of Hawaii, had expired and the appointment of his successor was under consideration. President Roosevelt, knowing that I was in the city and presuming that I, as the first American bishop of the American Episcopal Church in Hawaii, knew something about conditions in the islands, sent me a card appointing a time for an interview. As I approached the White House with an old California friend, I said to him just before he left me at the gate: "It seems wonderful to me that I, who landed on the American Continent in 1872, a youth of seventeen without a friend of acquaintance in this great Country, should now be going to have a private interview with the President of the United States. As I sat in the ante-room waiting for my name to be called, the events of my life passed through my mind. When I arrived on American soil my possessions were a few dollars, good health, an education which would have admitted me to the ordinary American college of that day, a training in character which I had received in a good Christian home and a willingness to work at anything I could find to do. Here I was now after thirty years, sent for the President to talk to him about affairs in Hawaii. Now, at the age of seventy-eight, I have lived sixty years in the United States and I have been a worker on a farm, a teacher, a student in a college, an ordained minister and a bishop. I have lived with the pioneers in California and in Hawaii. I have met on terms of intimacy a large number of men and women prominent in business and political life and have had friends of wealth and influence whose names are well known. I am told that there are stories of my early struggles and incidents in my friendships which will be of interest to many as they refer to social conditions in places where I have lived. Then there are anecdotes of curious people, or people of prominence which are often extraordinary. I believe that the story of my life will be another illustration of a career which should encourage young men of ordinary ability to try by hard work dr Hawaii, Americana, U. S. Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book contributes to the historical conversation about Lay Readers through legislation and church canon law. Starting from the biblical origins of the role of the Lay Reader, the author explores how the role changed during the first centuries of the church with groups such as the Salvation Army and the Society Of Friends. Lay Readers performed various roles such as teaching, preaching, and providing pastoral care, and were central to the growth of the Church in the US, especially in areas where there were few clergy. The book provides practical guidance for those wishing to lead services as a lay reader, and also discusses the spiritual life of the Lay Reader. This book is a valuable resource for those considering a Lay Reader ministry, as well as for priests and bishops who are considering using Lay Readers in their parishes. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.…

Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. Neuware - 'Hawaii, 1778-1920, From the Viewpoint of a Bishop' offers a comprehensive historical overview of the Hawaiian Islands during a transformative century and a half. Written by Henry Bond Restarick, the first American Bishop of the Episcopal Church in Hawaii, this work provides a unique perspective on the social, political, and religious evolution of the islands from the arrival of Captain Cook in 1778 through the early 20th century. Restarick meticulously chronicles the transition of Hawaii from an isolated archipelago to a cosmopolitan territory of the United States. The narrative explores the influence of Western explorers, the impact of Christian missions, and the complex shifting of power within the Hawaiian monarchy and government. Drawing from personal observations and historical records, the author details the cultural changes and the development of institutions that shaped modern Hawaii. This volume serves as both a historical record and a personal reflection on the growth of the Episcopal Church and the broader religious landscape of the islands. It remains a valuable resource for those interested in Pacific history, the intersection of faith and governance, and the rich heritage of the Hawaiian people. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it.
