Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. Black hardcover with title in gilt on spine. Condition: Very good, with just a hint of shelfwear to covers and a little faint browning to endpapers. Binding sound, no inscriptions. Dustjacket condition: Good, with light shelfwear. 348pp. 519 b/w illustrations, 2 colour plates. This book contains a careful comparison of two groups of houses evolving stylistically at the same time, on different continents. It reveals that the Virginia dwellings were consistently larger and more elaborate; had numerous distinctly "American" aspects; were erected for people of higher social status, yet had brickwork surprisingly conservative compared to England at the same time, and are related to English houses of this type more as cousins than as offspring.
