The Poetry Foundation Noted: "Although the early part of Robert Browning's creative life was spent in comparative obscurity, he has come to be regarded as one of the most important English poets of the Victorian period. His dramatic monologues and the psycho-historical epic The Ring and the Book (1868-1869), a novel in verse, have established him as a major figure in the history of English poetry. His claim to attention as a children's writer is more modest, resting as it does almost entirely on one poem, "The Pied Piper of Hamelin," included almost as an afterthought in Bells and Pomegranites. No. III.Dramatic Lyrics (1842) and evidently never highly regarded by its creator. Nevertheless, "The Pied Piper" moved quickly into the canon of children's literature, where it has remained ever since, receiving the dubious honor (shared by the fairy tales of Hans Christian Andersen and J.M. Barrie's Peter Pan) of appearing almost as frequently in "adapted" versions as in the author's original. His approach to dramatic monologue influenced countless poets for almost a century. Day-Lewis was made a Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire by George VI in his 1950 Birthday Honours.[10] He later taught poetry at Oxford, where he was Professor of Poetry from 1951 to 1956.[7] During 19621963, he was the Norton Professor at Harvard University. Day-Lewis was appointed Poet Laureate in 1968, in succession to John Masefield. In exceptionally good condition.

Full-Leather. Condition: Fine. Peter Reddick (illustrator). [1979] Hardcover bound in genuine leather. THIS IS THE 1979 FULL, FINE LEATHER BINDING EDITION BY EASTON PRESS - NOT THE CHEAPER TRADE BOOK, OR THE MASS-PRODUCED TRADE EDITION; NOR IS IT SIMULATED LEATHER, A COMPOSITE LEATHER, OR A FACSIMILE. Selected, edited and introduced by C. Day Lewis. Illustrated frontispiece, illustrated wood engravings by Peter Reddick. Collector's edition. This beautifully bound, genuine leather was hand selected from individually tanned hides. Sophisticated, four raised ridges on spine, lettering and designs on binding stamped with gorgeous accents of 22kt. gold - a hallmark of fine bookmaking. Textured and shaded, acid-neutral paper won't turn yellow over time. Pages are Smyth-sewn into the binding for permanence (not glued like ordinary books). Endpapers are beautiful satin moiré, specially dyed for the publisher. All edges gilded on three sides to enhance the book's elegance. Satin ribbon page marker bound into book. Condition: Fine, new. Book never read (purchased by physician as a collectible for display in his bookcase). Kept in temperature-controlled environment (not smelly or speckled with humidity stains. And no smoker's smell). Apart from a few poems first published in periodicals, the selection in this volume originally appeared in various publications during the 1880s. Browning's fame was secured in 1869 with The Ring and the Book, a book-length poem based on a 17th century Italian murder case. At the time, his earlier work was being published in collected editions, and volume after volume poured from his pen. In this volume, the poems were selected by Cecil Day Lewis, who also annotated them and written the perceptive introduction. A wonderful collection of Browning's poems in a beautiful, full leather-bound book in gift-giving condition.
