Allerdings war dem Jodeln diese in allen Gesellschaftsschichten wirksame und transnationale Vermittlerrolle nicht immer eigen: In der zweiten Hälfte des 19. Jahrhunderts wurde es zur Begründung kultureller und nationaler Abgrenzungen instrumentalisiert, wobei strenge Jodelexperten in einer einseitig geführten Debatte zwischen dem 'richtigen'/'ursprünglichen' Jodeln der Bergbevölkerung und dem 'falschen'/'gekünstelten' Jodeln auf der Bühne, das in der Schweiz als 'Tirolerei' beschimpft wurde, unterschieden. Noch bis Ende des 20. Jahrhunderts galt das Jodeln als eine Art 'musikalischer Patriotismus', doch scheint es den Aktivistinnen und Aktivisten der 'Neuen Jodelbewegung' nun gelungen zu sein, die Altlasten dieser besonderen Gesangsart ganz nach dem Motto 'Jodle dich frei' abzulegen.Die Jodelgeschichte der letzten zweihundert Jahre lässt erkennen, dass das Jodeln immer schon Teil von Kulturtransferprozessen war. Dadurch ergibt das registerwechselnde Singen in den Alpen ein interessantes und wegweisendes Untersuchungsmaterial, an dem gesellschaftspolitische Änderungen nachvollzogen und die wechselseitigen Auswirkungen zwischen Gesellschaft und Musik untersucht werden können. In der vorliegenden Studie werden die historischen Entwicklungen des Jodelns in der Schweiz und in Tirol sowie ihre Unterschiede und Gemeinsamkeiten miteinander verglichen, wofür schriftliche Quellen, Notationen, Bildquellen, früheste Aufnahmen sowie die Resultate aktueller Feldforschungen ausgewertet werden.
