He served in the War of 1812, and entered the legal profession at Shawneetown, Illinois, serving as a pioneer judge and editor in Illinois and Ohio. From 1833 to the end of his life he engaged in banking at Cincinnati and wrote constantly. He is perhaps best remembered as man who pioneered a new literary realism in the Midwest through the newspaper he edited and books he authored such as "Sketches of the West" (1835) and the well-known "History of the Indian Tribes of North America" (With Thomas McKenney, 1838-44).
